To really lessens your loss on cryptocurrency you must diversified your investment on multiple crypto so that you can minimize your loss and gains. But before that you must research the project and the concept of it if it is really will get gains on the future.
As expected when Bitcoin is going strong many hands will sell their alts in favor of cashing in their BTC it is expected market behavior. I do suggest that you just hold your coins until they Bitcoin bull stabilizes and it would be the alts turn to increase in value.
Altcoins follow BTC and ether with a delay. Assuming that BTC began to grow, nothing needs to be done now. You can buy a few alts until they begin to go by the leading coins.

bitcoin rise has only made the dumps happen faster than usual otherwise the dumps would have happened on their own as it is customary of the pump to have a dump!

I also think you should have some amount of bitcoin and even ethereum in your portfolio because they are the best coin to have in crypto, though the price is down now but there is a slow rise in the price of bitcoin and I think this will continue until the bull comes in and I also believe if there is higher demand for bitcoin, then the price will continue to grow and that is when the altcoins will also begin to rise but be patient for the market to recover fully and as the price of bitcoin rise, altcoin will also rise.
It is your bad strategy if you have not diversified and not holding any btc, as we should know that btc bulls can bulldoze everything else, btc dominancy is also increasing nicely that is also indicating strong btc bulls, i think it will be super run for btc.
Strong btc is crushing us. Altcoins is falling. NEO, ETH, XRP they are all traveling in hell.
