Having said that, my favorite player is Phillip Jerome Hellmuth Jr.

I don't care how social media portrays him as a crybaby. Truth is, he is a disciplined man, and his long, consistent career speaks for itself. He is still not given his due credit. I mean, 17 WSOP bracelets, and you think he is a crybaby  Cheesy

The social media made him hard as cry baby because most of the highlights I watch involving him is he always lose badly by a better hand even though his hand is strong too.

I believe Tom Dwan is his nemesis when it comes to 1v1 match. But I do understand why you like him since he is always cautious on most of his games except when luck doesn’t favor him.

My favorite is Phil Ivey. He is so hard to read and intimidating as hell if you 1v1 him. You will always think that has the strongest hand.

Some people could luckily have that kind of gift (not common) but unfortunately they could secretly be going through some challenges (internally) which no body would be aware of, and suffering secretly, they could just die of what they are living with, and people might not know about it. With how lucky he was and the money he made, knowing fully well that he can continually be lucky like that, he would not allow himself to die, but seems he was totally out of control with somethings that was going on with his life.

So, he has talent "a photographic memory" which gives him an edge. But since he doesn’t take care of his body, that makes him stupid.

He probably doesn’t believe in the saying "health is wealth,"... which is why all his money goes to waste, he didn’t even get to enjoy it for long.

Maybe that’s just how gamblers are. I mean, when you’re deep into gambling, you’re often surrounded by people who are into vices like drugs and alcohol. That’s why he can’t really be considered a professional gambler because a true pro takes care of the most important thing in life: their health.

Photographic memory is called eidetic syndrome in psychology. People who have it seem to have talents, and many of us would probably like to have at least a little of such abilities. But where a person has a lot of something, in another place there may not be enough. As crude as it may seem, psychologists consider such a syndrome a pathology. It is a mental disorder that should be under the supervision of a doctor regularly. Perhaps Stu Ungar had something similar; otherwise, having such abilities, he would not have wasted his life on drugs.

Reminds me of Mike Ross from Suits, the guy pretended to be a lawyer just because he was so smart. Once he read a book, he never forgot what was in it. (If you haven’t watched this series yet, you should!)

Having a gift is great, but what really matters is how we use it. Using it for gambling? That’s not wrong. What’s wrong is getting into drugs and becoming dependent on them. We all know the effects, no sleep, bad health, and eventually, it destroys you. That’s the real killer.

I didn't know that somebody like him existed. I believe that you can be great at something if you put your mind to it and have the right motivation and inspiration. There's probably something lacking in what he has because he still doesn't take care of himself.

And the drugs that he takes makes him think that he is invincible and so he live the life of the gambler although when you think of it, he says that he loves his daughter very much and yet he wasted everything thru his gambling and bad lifestyle. Just like any individual who are in the limelight just like rock stars and even sports athletes. The fame and everything, and so they go to drug and alcohol and then it's either you're dead on in the rehab. So just a wasted talent in the early years of poker, although he is legendary, how he ended his life is really but a bad dreams.

I'm not really into playing poker, but I follow news for the longest time. And it's a good game, I just don't have like the time to sit on that table for a long time. I know that there are some great players here and they have their tournaments, so kudos to them.

Over time, I have realized that talent/high IQ does not mean anything. What you require is training and self-discipline in order to be successful and, more importantly, to sustain that success. I am not really fond of Ungar as he did not set a good example to follow. I mean no disrespect to him.

Dude is a story of innate gift and memory to gamble, and a tragic life of drug addiction. Reading through his biography, he was a great Poker & Blackjack player, but destroyed his life with cocaine addiction. Drugs which was used for recreation didn't take time for him to start abusing it which led to his run. His peers takes part of the blame for introducing him to it and leaving him on his own to fuck himself up so much.

A reminder to everyone that addiction of any sort can ruin your life if care isn't taken. For someone who amassed a whooping $30 million fortune to die without a single asset to his name is more than a shame. He was a great man with rare achievements, but it's so sad he died a puppet.

Taking this two recent gambling topics here,

Gambling loss lead to suicide!
Luck and skill, which is more important for gambling success?

And obviously, @memehunter's poker tournament, we might have to look at one of the greatest poker player we have in history,

Quote
Ungar is one of two people in poker history to have won the World Series of Poker Main Event three times. He is the only person to win Amarillo Slim's Super Bowl of Poker three times, the world's second most prestigious poker title of its time.[3] Additionally, Ungar is one of only four players in poker history to win consecutive titles in the WSOP Main Event, along with Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stu_Ungar

Ungar really live up life to the fullest, he was not only a gambler, but he turns out to be a cocaine addict as well that took his life.

Here is Ungar winning the 1997 World series of Poker

Truly a legend, but it's just unfortunate that even he put his kids as his inspiration to gamble and win tournament and obviously have the money for them, he didn't take care of his body and abuse it leading to his death. And he really has the skills, specially learning to gamble at a young age because of the influence of his environment and he is really good at math and has a photographic memory that's why he became a legend.
