Indeed; the altcoin market is currently an unspeakable mess and chances are high you'll end up with a bunch of worthless coins at best and get scammed at worst. Times of making easy profits with ICO's and alts are over it seems. We've seen the summer of Altcoins this year (market share of BTC down to just 37% in june) but is seems BTC is gradually pushing back the alts again since several months. I'm gonna stick with BTC and several established alts myself.

In short: there's no future for altcoins, not like it was before.

Lately I'm not paying much attention to news or the threads created on bitcointalk, but in my opinion we're witnessing what I was expected to happen: Atlcoins and ICOs are destroying each other. Several years ago you could have launched a coin, make some fancy logo and promises, and voila - you make easy money. But back in the days there were no 100s of billions $ involved on a monthly basis and scammers were not affecting the market this much. How about ICOs? I'll call these guys "dreamers". They are a hybrid/crossbreed between a scammer and people who think that they will change the world. And whats even worse - many people believe in that.

Nowadays you can pretty much raise millions of $ in 5 seconds on "ideas", which (if you at least try to think harder) doesn't have a practical use. And when the time proves it, the ones who took money for their "ideas" are saying "We tried" and the masses are dumping. But you don't have to be a genius to see that this "system" is already exhausting. Also, you don't have to be a genius to listen that the word "regulation" now sounds louder.

Guys, only several altcoins will stay, because this is what I also expect to happen:

1) Bitcoin is already regaining its dominance and it is a matter of time to explode ($5300 is still a joke).
2) Regulations are coming and most of the alts will die.
3) People won't be allowed to launch new projects, even if they have invented the tap water.

I will try to speculate and state that soon there will be no more than ~50 digital currencies.

of a truth I am in support of ico projects regulations as most of them are the one bringing setback to the development of blockchain technology. In two to three years to come most of the altcoins we currently have with less than $20,000 market capitalization are going to die! I strongly believe that the future of altcoins market is bright but not with the current system we have. Ico has to be regulated and every other thing will fell into place. If we actually have 50 digital currencies we can really manage them in a way that every one will enjoy this great technology.

You brought some very good points. I have to add that in this market there are not only dreamers, there are also people who know very well what they are getting into. But they will continue to invest and promote these scam tokens because they think they are smarter than everybody else.

The bad news for them is that they may end up scamming themselves. These guys have no idea of how illiquid these markets are, and there will be not enough room for most of them when they try to cash out.

I agree with you that not most alts will not survive in long term, but cryptos is still young in my opinion there is scope for many new projects that could use blockchain technology.

I am sure many projects on the market will not be alive in the future but this market will survive as long as solid projects are unique ideas

I think it all depends on the Altcoin developers themselves, how they deliver the best quality to everyone, and keep the price growing and good in the market, maybe that way I'm sure everything will be fine in the market.

Saying Altcoins don't have a future is crazy. This is the new Wall Street. It is going to replace the stock market eventually and there is nothing they can do to stop it.

Well that's not going to happen. Stocks have their own purpose. That is, divide big corporations in smaller pieces because no one can afford to own any major company. No stock exchange would mean no big companies at all.

why? because people will continue to accept the fraud that the top 100 cryptocurrencies can keep themselves intact via privileged massmedia propaganda and energywasting? or via a syndicate like established media system (coin listenings at coinmarketcap) the point is that the current media propaganda also creates their reality, bitcoin was worth at the beginning 0 and only the claim it is worth something caused it to be belived to be valuable today.

i expect in the future not just currencies to start decentralise but also mass media focus and "expert opinions" attention. even facts will become decentral because claimed facts also create reality.

this will then lead of course to a collapse of the current cryptocurrencies that are in an advantage due to the mass media privileged attention that they currently enjoy

lets see how they will do then.

PS: if those at the lower end of Coinmarketcap would be smart and i think soon they will. they simply create their own Coin market caplist with their own facts to make those facts then a reality. Since we decentralise currencies, why not also decentralise facts too.
no one knows where those volumes of bitcoin ehtereum and else comes from, they could have been faked at the begining between smaller groups.
this facts splitting is in my oppinion sooner or later unavoidable it will happen and the market will divide.

regards

This post got me thinking and checking from coinmarketcap website how these are calculated ... It turned out that they are simply multiplying price and circulation supply (https://coinmarketcap.com/faq/ ) So, if you have a coin and it's traded somewhere publicly and you search the supply, you realize they can't make those market caps out of thin air. (Theorethically it would be possible to leave some coin out of the list but I won't see why someone would cheat that way round.)

Whenever we speak about cryptocurrencies, there is bitcoin and then everything else. List of a total of more than 500 digital currencies starting with bitcoin , ether, litecoin, ripple and finishing with BTCtalkcoin.

New altcoins are being created all the time and for very diverse reasons.Bitcoin and any other digital currencies will likely enter the mainstream but only adoption of standards frameworks.

Many of the coins that exist today will vanish, for lack of any real demand.

However , see the vision of state sponsored cryptocurrencies becoming a reality in five years.

Altcoins will see another rise up during the year 2016 in relation to how they answer to current concerns of the bitcoin community.

1. Welcome to the Bitcoin FOMO thread I guess. Sure let all sell alts cheap, and buy Bitcoin  when it peaked, why not? Smiley

2. As long as crowdfounding ICO will be succesfull there will be new coins.

A lot of company would try to create own tokens to trade it like they trade stocks.

But I agree there is a lot of "noise" ICO which will be not succesfull and will die.

3. There will be places in the world which would allow ICOs (Seychelas, Bahamas, etc "money-laundering" offshore zones)

I think only 100 cryptos will survive. Top 5 will be BTC, ETH, LTC, WAVES, RIPPLE.

Great discussion. Amazed by your views. However, i have to disagree on 50 digital currencies. Regulations will definitely come in and that is actually necessary to help the communities. But there are so much to tap into different aspect of our lives and crypto can solve all these. And we dont just need 1 of each aspect, it is ok to have competition to make it better for user end. So 50 is very little, i am looking into 500~1000.

Altcoin future is bright more and more people realized they can profit in altcoins
not only with bitcoin, with the help through world wide web, people easily understand
and learned how to make lots of profit out of it,
because there are easy guide, also some study hard and monitor how the market goes
so i think there is no need to panic or stress yourself thinking any bad will happen
just invest but dont invest to much
like everyone says only invest money you are willing to loose, so be careful also

I think there will only be some altcoins alone that can survive and the new altcoins are only stronger at the beginning and the longer will slowly be forgotten, and in the end the old ones will survive.

The strong ones will survive and be around for a long time, weaker projects will struggle to keep support for their coins I think
