Forked Ethereum is a precedent of what might come.

May a thousand flowers bloom. Good for BTC Smiley

But it's not good for cryptocurrency as a whole.  It could (arguably) even hold Bitcoin back.  The uncertainty caused by Buterin could hurt us all as supporters whether you're a developer, researcher, entrepreneur or speculator.

Wrong to be honest. Its only bad for ETH, the world will go on. Nobody is going to stop because of this. BTC is a separate entity, and ETC is doing a good job separating itself from bailoutcoin (ETH).

Wait, what? This isn't over yet? And there is still the possibility of yet another fork? The article wasn't clear to me if both chains would require an eventual fork. just a definite on ETH.

Mind is blown. Even if Godzilla becomes involved with this at some point, I'm jaded.

Charles Hoskinson who used to be with the foundation but left is now joining ETC (no joke).  He announced it on Twitter.  Anyway am holding both to hedge my bets.

But what is this thing with a "replay attack" ?  To me that's no attack at all.  If you sign a transaction that was on the old chain, then of course that signature is as valid on the new chain A as on the new chain B.  Remember that what was protecting your old UTXO on the old chain was the fact that you didn't gave out a valid signature and that you were the only one being able to produce one.  So once your signature is out, it is of course out for both chains.

The trick is to only sign transactions that include UTXO that are only valid on one chain.  For that, you need to obtain 1) DAO hacker coins or 2) DAO return address coins or 3) freshly mined coins on one of the chains.  You don't need much of it: a bit of dust of one of these is enough to make a transaction that will be considered invalid on the other chain, so that you can REDO a signature, but this time on the second chain.

But for sure it is not an "attack".  I don't know why people call it that way.  If you have given out the signature in public, of course people will use it.

Yes exploit would be more accurate.  Thats what people call it I think it is based on a cryptographic term where the term attack is used.

Pretty soon there's gonna be an eth fork for every single crypto user.

If that isn't empowerment then i dunno what is.

Yes I think I got it a bit backwards actually.  This whole thing is a big mind-fuck if you excuse the language.  My head is exploding with all the new developments.

Crypto is the separation of Power and State.
Classic Ethereum looks like it will be staying for a while.  But who is developing/maintaining it?  Are there a group if  volunteers of core developers to bring the project forward?

Quote from: Zsolt Felföldi
let’s make it clear that we (the ethereum developers) have never abandoned the old chain.

The "Ethereum Classic" chain is just as much our child as the forked one, and if both of them survive (which is the users’ choice, not ours), then I intend to take care of them equally in the future too.

Zsolt Felföldi is an ethereum developer working on the Go implementation of the ethereum protocol, sometimes called Geth.

This ETH dev says which fork survives "is the users’ choice, not ours" but Chancellor Butarin believes he makes the law, passes the sentence, and should swing the sword.

Comedy ensues, then intensifies.   Smiley

how i wonder if this movement is for real or another pump and dump case from eth project, really annoyed me but if this one works well eth
will pump more and more, let see how far it can go.

With that announcement the price movement is due to the speculation that kraken will bring more trading, but all the eth holders there will instantly have ETC to trade.  That means a dump so time to consider again about buying in and gambling a bit when that happens.
