Seems like "mdayonliner" and me having the same thought when it comes to the spammers on the forum Wink. Actually, I agreed with both hands that your statement of "the traffic comes from 100 spammers means nothing", well-said man Smiley
Yes we are. I am all in for quality over quantity.

Funny how those charts change when you zoom out a bit  Shocked  Cheesy
OP, stop spreading FUD!

As if the FUD on bitcoin was not enough, we have FUD on Bitcointalk now.

Give Theymos a life, he has got better things to do then to comment on all posts in meta  or spending all his merits (as demanded by another meta thread).

as OgNasty has pointed out the site traffic is directly related to Bitcoins value
in December and early January the interest in Bitcoin grew phenomenally as
newcomers flocked to the site to search for and learn as much as they could
and the fact that there were/are so many threads with duplicating information
finding what one was looking for contributed to a lot of traffic.

This will all happen again when the the FIAT values climb.

Hey OP take a look at this thread at "Serious discussion board",[@Theymos] List of viable ideas to clean up the forum. which created by "Shitcointalk". I am a supporter of your suggestions and also that member too. Lets together make some noise hoping "Theymos" will hear what most of the forum members( not the spammers or bots) suggesting for the betterment of bitcointalk.

Those are my suggestions apart from other senior members,

  • ANN threads should not be awarded Merits
  • The posts in the ANN threads should not count as activity

I think these two suggestions from "Welsh" and "LTU_btc" are also worth to consider when it comes to the clogging of "Meta board" by shitposters.

This is why I suggested that the message displayed when you are banned be changed to contact theymos/cyrus to appeal the ban. This way it doesn't clog up the Meta section. It's hardly a public matter anyway so it makes sense to have it privately discussed via personal messages.

Anyway, 99.9% of banned users have no chance to be unbanned,
Absolutely right. That's what I'm highlighting. Why we are allowing to post those annoying posts asking the same question again and again by those 99.9% everyday whose already knows the answer that they get.
Almost all of these users don't have chance to be unbanned, but despite that, they have right to appeal. Many of banned users don't even know reason why they got ban and by making these threads they get explanation from mods. But maybe it would better to show reason of ban when users are trying to login in to banned account. Then we would see less ban appeal threads I think.

Seems like "mdayonliner" and me having the same thought when it comes to the spammers on the forum Wink. Actually, I agreed with both hands that your statement of "the traffic comes from 100 spammers means nothing", well-said man Smiley

. I my opinion, it's better to have 1 good member who cares about the forum than having 100 spammers on a forum. For a legit new member, the traffic coming from 100 spammers means nothing than the value s/he will get from the genuine 1 member.

I truly support your idea about "Infinity snap", but I think it would be better if mods can looking into the members profile and their post history before take any actions. I have looking in to that Reddit subsection and some of the members missed the snapping date(9th july 2018) due to unavoidable personal reasons ( but they all are not the shitposters) and they got banned. So if we going for this kind of system of banning (I believed we should) better to implement a system only filtered the real shitposters but not members who really cares about the forum. Some times they can be inactive some period of time due to personal reasons which didn't mean that they are spammers or shitposters.

One good member actually worth more than hundred of shitposters or spammers.

I don't think at this point theymos is really caring about traffic. Have a look on the graphs below

1) The date range is: Jan 1st 2016 to till date
2) Last two years

If you look at the images then it's clear that, around Jan 6th 2017 was the highest in terms of visitors for BitcoinTalk and December 16th 2017 had the ATH for bitcoin price. Actually the peak started for bitcoin from sometimes in November 2017 and the visitor graph for Bitcointalk also followed the same . Once the price started to drop the visitor graph again followed the same trend.

So, I think the same (agree) like OgNasty. It really is related to the Bitcoin price bubble. In crypto space most people start getting greedy to buy when the price is at it's peak and they start selling when the price drops to the bottom and then they call themselves that they are expert in cryptospace LOL

Anyway my guess is - theymos is focusing on improving the content quality of the forum than anything else. This is the exact reason for the Merit system and also the proposal to everyone to think about the "Idea: courses". I my opinion, it's better to have 1 good member who cares about the forum than having 100 spammers on a forum. For a legit new member, the traffic coming from 100 spammers means nothing than the value s/he will get from the genuine 1 member.

I personally prefer a smaller amount of people actually making sense over an army of shitposters. So if the majority of traffic that we lost is due to fewer bounty hunters... good riddance. Also I'm not too sure whether advertisers are really all too keen on spam traffic anyway.

Nonetheless I concur with OgNasty and Don Pedro Dinero that the recent bear market -- affecting both BTC and alts -- is probably the major cause of the recent traffic decline over anything else.

Do you even know how a website traffic is rated? If you're not aware google keeps on having updates which sometimes makes your rankings up and for others it goes down, the serps never stay in a same position you need to constantly look for the updates, do seo and be in check so your statement that theymos has not commented due to traffic is baseless and is not supportive cause for traffic he needs to focus on seo, serps and the latest updates.

Google Page Rank != Alexa traffic statistics.

OP is referring to Alexa traffic statistics which reflect page visits, not how well a website fares for certain key words and search phrases.

Is theymos worried about web traffic due to advertising ?

No.

Based on the fact that I now felt that the driving force behind theymos' decisions was not $

Right, I don't care about making money from the forum personally. (I've actually thought about getting rid of the forum ads, since it's often a big headache and the forum has enough reserves for a long time, but operating at a significant loss while there's money basically just sitting on the table feels wrong, even if the level of loss is sustainable for quite a while.)

If you are going to compare the traffic to what it was when bitcoin was at its peak of about $19000, it would appear less for sure.

Regarding, Theymos being worried about traffic, even if he is what is wrong with it ?

I’m sure the bubble popping had a major effect on Bitcoin activity. The addition of merit also likely reduced the number of unwanted visits.

Yes, I think that has more to do with the bear market we are having since January than with scam ICOs, because there were also scams last year.
It seems that Theymos likes to think deeply before he implements any changes, so he might be thinking about some way to fight scam ICOs but it usually takes time for him to take a decision.

To avoid spaming some well reputed & potential member's posted some useful suggestion. Those will help to prevent spam /Scam from forum. Even we can't see theymos leave his feed back on there. Is theymos worried about web traffic due to advertising ?
What is the reason of underestimate some best proposal?   From February 2018 web traffic for Bitcointalk is dropping down.
February Alexa rank was : 883
Current Alexa rank : 2522

It's too much different now from February.

I don't know exactly what is the reason. But I guess due most recent ICO scam hunters are disappointed. As I know almost 90% visitor's are bounty hunters here(my opinion). Some how most of people (not all) here to earn money. Most of earning source from ICO. So due to scam virus visitors are drop down day by day.
Many reputed & potential mambers share some good idea to or prevent scam & spam. But unfortunately theymos not interested about those idea. I believe admin should consider some recent best suggestion given by potential member's below:

I think if consider above suggestion it will not effect much on web traffic. It might be help more to increase traffic. Because again hunters will encourage for come back.
I make this post for pay attention to admin again to consider that. Thanks in advanced.
