You can also ask someone else to vouch for you and get an account whitelisted from paying the fee. I dont know if there is an official way to do it or someone specific you should contact though. Its been a while and I wasnt sober so please dont ask me for details I dont remember myself.
most moderators can whitelist user accounts
"most"

Any staff member can whitelist, a couple users as well though I don't want to name them so they get drowned in whitelist requests.

I'll whitelist on request for solid members, or if one vouches, most others will as well. There's no particular rules for it, as long as the whitelisted person doesn't immediately start posting garbage.

Setup you own TOR exit node and you'll be able to register a shit load of accounts through it. Smiley
I don't think that would work. I heard that this forum charges every registration through Tor nodes. Since all Tor nodes are public, I'm sure they update their list fairly often of IP's to charge for registration.

It's not about TOR, evil units are attributed to IPs of banned users, or IPs with a shit load of accounts registered, don't remember exactly, somewhere in META there's a post detailing how it is done.

Yes good point, if I have a better solution I should present that rather than complain about the current system in place.

I DON'T think the current system works though, as the speculation threads are overrun with moron(s) creating new accounts every 5 minutes. I preferred newbie jail frankly.

Does the current solution minimize spam? Yes, so therefore it's working. Is the current solution ideal? I don't think so. Though, some compromises have to be made. I'm sure theymos is all ears if you can think of a better solution.

well in the majority of cases, someone can use faucets to "earn" their way out of a proxyban in a pretty short period of time. This is probably one of the *only* good things about faucets

The units of evil system was only implemented relatively recently as spam became more of a problem. It is designed to make it difficult for someone to create a lot of accounts that end up getting banned. If you only want to create one (or a very small number of) account to remain anon on then the cost will be negligible.

Isn't the fee really small?

it is. ranging from 0.005BTC to 0.01BTC.
considering that you'll become anonymous, that's pretty cheap.
That is not true. The cost depends on how many units of evil the IP address that was used to register has. Most of the time it is well under .0001 BTC, however the IP addresses (IP ranges) with the most units of evil sometimes will cost well over .01 BTC

I dont think the payment of 6k sat is enough to stop people who register a ton of accounts anyways. I think its stupid.

Presumably, Satoshi used tor to post on this forum. Otherwise his anonymity would....well not exist.

I find it annoying how we have to pay to make use of this forum using tor, especially given what has led us here.

You only have to pay if you register an account from an IP address that was used to register a shitload of accounts.

If you register the account from a 'clean' IP you can then connect through TOR and use the forums without any problem.

That opens another set of problems: You would have to either find a "clean" TOR exit node (as far as I understand), or register through a clearnet public IP, otherwise your privacy would still be compromised Smiley

Dude, there are like a ton of free proxies and VPNs out there.

The problem is not with TOR in particular, just the IP address was used a lot for new accounts, you can register through some free proxy and end up with the account blocked because it was already used a lot.

And you can register with your IP, your privacy isn't compromised, it's just a number.

No use for TOR, then? Cheesy

You don't have to pay a lot to do it. If it is worth it to you do it. I suspect TOR is used an awful lot for sock puppet accounts here.

Yep you would have to do exactly this or even simpler would be buying an account from some other forun member.
Low rank one would cost you maybe 0.005BTC tops.
