It's Ether, Neo, Stellar for me
Personally I am loading up on ICON and Ethereum. Especially ICON will go up in the upcoming months - wallet release in March and token swap.
Both your strategies are valid. Hoarding few esteablished coins grants you a lower crash rate, I share this view. If you're not confident enough in doing margin trading (that's to say fiat <--> crypto) the best you could do is stock up the ones you both enrolled. Ethereum is good too. It drops much less compared to the majority of cryptos.
If I had the capital I would buy as much as ether, neo and omni. I think that many projects will be developed based on these altcoins.
In my opinion, during a crash like this people are nervous of investing at all, let alone in smaller, riskier coins. So during big dips I stock up on the well established coins, ones with proven partnerships and working products that have the best chance of a strong rebound. I've been buying mostly ETH, NEO and BTC, but also a little XRB, XLM and VEN.

NEO - at 80 dollars - climbing up slowly, just lovely, holding is rewarded in GAS (which is also expensive)
