So whats the current situation? Still on target for a 2 month profitability?

Too optimistic for me. Evil-Knievel has considered only upfront costs: he will change his view when the first power bill arrives :-) Not considering maintenance costs and choosing the "right" coin to mine.

i always wonder why you guys that build these crazy good rigs don't spend $20-$40 more on a quad or 6 core cpu and mine gpu and cpu their still profit to be made with CPU especially when asic script miners that are coming out take over.

Brb increasing power usage by 100w+ for like what, 100 kh/s? It's a massive waste, that's why nobody does it.

+ CPU mining lowers the GPU-hash (more often than not).

@Bitaxed yes i have no errors nothing, ill use Smos 1.3 with these settings: and i have got the r9 290 tri-x cards

[...]
"shaders" : "2560",
"thread-concurrency" : "25599",
"gpu-thread" : "1",

"gpu-memclock" : "1250"

@Alecsss Very good results for R9 290. Surprisingly with a low gpu-memclock! Are you sure that cgminer does not adjust such parameters? To push more kH/s you can try a greater gpu-memclock (R9 290 tri-x has a default mem clock of 1300Mhz).

Nevertheless, I do not think Evil-Knievel is in the wrong way if we look at kH/s per Watt. With two PSU (one of these not platinum) you are wasting power: you lose 5-10% with the platimax and more with the RM1000. Your system produces 6 x 915 / 2055W = 2.67 kHs/W. I tested four R9 290X with a platinum 1200W PSU @880kH/s and go close to 3.00kHs/W. This can pay in the long run. Try a lower gpu-powertune (10% and 0%) and see if you can sustain a 915kH/s hash rate consuming less power :-)

To all the people wondering what risers guy used in his 5x 290 miner.

Something like this

hi guys,

@ trdiablo I use usb riser cables because the normal risers gives me a lot of problems and with these ones my problem was gone ;-)

@Smoerble  im sorry i am from the netherlands and don't speak german very wel... otherwise its no problem to translate it for you ;-)

Nice project!!!

But why dont u use Asrock h81 pro btc mobo, then you can place 6 cards on each mobo jou can make your own rig from wood ore order one rig.
it will save u energy now u have so many systems ;-)

i use this rig now:

1x Asrock h81 pro btc
1x Intel G3220
2x Corsair Vengeance 4gb each
1x Enermax 1500egt
1x Corsair rm1000
6x Sapphire r9 290 tri-x

in total it costs 2055 Watts the cards producing 915 Hashes each. In my rig alt the cards are standing 9,5 centimeters from eachother, and they are 74 degrees each card.

Here a little video of the first run:

I watched your video, but still dont get what kind of risers you are using?
They dont look like the regular x1 to x16 24CM risers?

A question:

i dont think 850watt PSU is enough for 4 GPU, since each GPU is taking around 300watt.

How do u want to manage it ?

He is using 2 cards per mobo, perfect size psu for that

@Alecsss how do you reach 915kH/s with a R9 290? Are they stable without HW errors? Thx

Few things right off the bat:

1. Your are venting your air the wrong way, your computers are moving hot air around and not pulling it from outside so turn the computers around.
2. Take them out of those awful cases. You will see temperature drops across the board. You wasted an extra couple hundred on this useless hardware.
3. Riser cables. Despite the large amount of money you spent, you did not pay an additional $20-30 for a couple of riser cables to also help reduce temps and utilize PCI-E x1 and smaller slots that normally could not support x16 PCI-E cards and allow more than 2 GPU per board.
4. Why only have 2 GPUs per MOBO? and 850 W PSU? you could have gone w/ a 1200W PSU and support up to 4-5 cards per board.

Very cool project, but if you really spent $15,000 on this setup then it will take you tenfold longer than 66 days to earn that amount back, simply because of price fluctuations and the increasing difficult of litecoin. If you're using a mining calculator like from coinwarz.com or something similar, you should know that those numbers are never totally accurate. You could have gotten the same amount of hashing power for probably $4-6k if you follow the above guidelines and the other advice people have mentioned in this thread. Also, you must factor in unavoidable problems, like hardware failures, your favorite pool being DDos'ed or your workers being banned, etc. Hopefully it will all work out for you, but I am doubtful it will be as smooth as you think unfortunately. :/

@Alecsss:
woudl you mind to give me feedback on my calculator please? The article is in German, the calculator in the middle is in english.
I would kindly like to ask you to fill in your own data and tell me if the calculation fits your numbers from "Real Life experience".

From my rough calculation, based on 0,25€ per kWh, you would make 4500,-€ per year (24/7, 14 days downtime per year).

Thanks.

12,000 kh/s for $15,000 is too much in my opinion...

That's $1000 per 800 kh/s plus don't forget the large electricity cost

This is really bad math if you think that will be profitable
