I'm confused. Don't the default fee rules I posted explain why you were forced to pay a fee?

As for why it took so long to transfer, I have no idea.

Kyoo, this is news to me too, but after looking on the Bitcoin transaction fees page on the wiki, I found out that there are some default fee rules built into the client. One of them is this:

Quote
0.01 BTC fee per kilobyte of transaction, but:

  • If the blocksize (size of all transactions currently waiting to be included in a block) is less than 27 kB, transactions are free.
  • If the blocksize is more than 250 kB, transactions get increasingly more expensive as the blocksize approaches the limit of 500 kB. Sending a transaction when the blocksize is 400 kB will cost 5 times the normal amount; sending when it's 499 kB will cost 500x, etc.

That seems like it explains what happened to you, though I am not sure (I have no idea what the state of those two conditions listed are). However it is most likely some sort of default rule in the bitcoin client. To stop these fees, the wiki recommends the free transaction relay policy, but as you can see not many miners are participating.

sammoocow, thanks for your input! My concern is not about having to pay a fee, more about why the client didn't ask me to put a fee/forced me to put a fee while sending the transaction request or what else the reason is, that the transaction of my 5.00 BTC got lost/doesn't arrive in my other wallet.

Hi Bitcoin community!

I would very much appreciate any explanation/help on an a transaction I did, that doesn't work. Thanks in advance!

I'm using Bitcoin 0.3.21-beta on Mac OS 10.6.7. I have 2 wallets. One is my "savings-wallet" and the other my "current-wallet". Depending on what account I want to use I replace the wallet.dat file before I start the Bitcoin application.

On 29.5.11 18:11 (UTC+1) I sent a transaction of 5.00 BTC without a transaction fee (debit shows -5.00 in the Bitcoin application) from my current account from the address: 1PqYze7YmxivhKkKkCR8FznF6RBfy64nDK
http://blockexplorer.com/address/1PqYze7YmxivhKkKkCR8FznF6RBfy64nDK

to my address in my savings account:
1DweYrezjeSe4RxvC2RBUwe32GJDTr61im
http://blockexplorer.com/address/1DweYrezjeSe4RxvC2RBUwe32GJDTr61im

PROBLEM: In my savings account, who holds the receiving address: 1DweYrezjeSe4RxvC2RBUwe32GJDTr61im
The transaction of 5.00 BTC never showed up, till today after almost a week! Sad

The Transaction seems to have been processed in block 127692 (2011-05-30 19:54:48):
http://blockexplorer.com/tx/9b6ccfa5e50d5088482cfbec03a69860873d5ea22846e60ed21bf02da574a605#i902584

According to rules I don't yet understand it has been split up into 3 seperate transactions: 3.07 + 0.47 + 1.47 = 5.01 BTC

As far as I understand block 127692 has been processed by 1NY6SY67qxZ7X75M1pL2v8qLRGn25unV8Z and this address has received 0.01 BTC from me. So I don't understand why in my current wallet it shows me only a debit of -5.00 BTC when in fact I had to pay 5.01 BTC?
I have NOT YET SET the bitcoin application to pay a transaction fee. Yes, I agree it's a good thing to pay the fee in the future I will of course do that as someone has to work to make a transaction happening...

In my current wallet the transaction with -5.00 BTC shows 883 confirmations at the moment.

Because the above mentioned transaction didn't work till today, I sent for testing purposes another 0.10 BTC from my current wallet from the address: 1PqYze7YmxivhKkKkCR8FznF6RBfy64nDK

to my savings wallet: 1DweYrezjeSe4RxvC2RBUwe32GJDTr61im. This transaction worked and I received it in my savings wallet. Including the 0.01 BTC transaction fee the debit on my current wallet shows -0.11 BTC. As you can see here:
http://blockexplorer.com/address/1DweYrezjeSe4RxvC2RBUwe32GJDTr61im

I have the Port 8333 open and 46 connections and I have downloaded from scratch some minutes ago 128577 blocks.

Anyone helping me here to solve my problem will receive a fair amount of BTC's Smiley THANKS AGAIN

My builds at 190000 but good to know.

Impossible as there are currently only about 128000 blocks in the block chain.

119000. typo. meaning i'd already downloaded most of the block chain. Kiss

There maybe really something wrong with sixofusu's account, because I checked the

http://blockexplorer.com/address/1G4JD8B2y3LjZ8iop6XHCsB6qQUsSfnWp9

still nothing. I have transfered 0.009btcs to this address two hours ago.

For comparison, I send 0.01 BTCs to another address, It has already showed.

Sub-cent transactions are not widely accepted by miners, and the most recent stable version of Bitcoin still refuses to relay them.

That make sense!

Your transaction is not listed on http://bitcoincharts.com/bitcoin/. This means that your client has not broadcasted it onto the network yet.

Interesting. So how does this help to solve the problem?

I just ran into the same situation: ...
Thank you for the consolation.

It is not same problem, but currently i get no connection too. Sad

but I guess most people won't go on a forum search to use a "wallet" and will just leave in frustration which I think would be really sad because this seems like a really promising system.
Right. Most people don't do that. They just leave wordless.

And, of course, it's really weird that a P2P network only works with a single connection ... but I guess that's off-topic ...
The client strives to keep 8 connections open. If this fails for some reason, you can add some nodes manually as explained on the Wiki:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:SqJrP-MOHrsJ:https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Fallback_Nodes
(Google cache since the server is down right now.)

I just ran into the same situation: All new to this, got the Bitcoin client installed, got a few transactions going (one from https://freebitcoins.appspot.com/ 2 more from VirWoX) and wondered why nothing shows in my client. I'm at "82668 blocks" and after restarting the client, I have 0 connections. Before I had 1 connection. I've had the client running for about 6 hours I guess but the blocks didn't increase (for a couple of minutes while I stared at them ;-) ) ... a few minutes after the restart now, and I have "1 connections" and the blocks are increasing. Nice ;-)

Thanks to this thread, I was able to look the transactions up in http://blockexplorer.com/ (they are there). And I think now I kind of understand what the problem is - but I guess most people won't go on a forum search to use a "wallet" and will just leave in frustration which I think would be really sad because this seems like a really promising system.

So, I guess it would help a lot of the client at least showed some sort of warning "blocks out of date, please wait until you're up to date". I'm really new to this, but I guess if there's zip-files with blocks it should also be possible to somehow get at least an estimate of what the current "blocks #" should be.

And, of course, it's really weird that a P2P network only works with a single connection ... but I guess that's off-topic ...

Okay. I'll give it a second try. And i try it your way. Let's see what happens.

I'm downloading the blockchain-zip. Must i take the old wallet and addr file?

I've deinstalled bitcoin and deleted everything.

EDIT: I could recover it from the time machine. *facepalm*
So I'll try that.

The blockchain counter was complete. (As showed at my initial post)
