Steam which is the largest digital gaming store have done that too but it was just nothing. It's just the other bad news where these companies joined the hype back in December and now that bitcoin is down, they removed it completely.
Merchants realize the system does work at all.  With Lightning being all fucked up, nobody wants to use bitcoin for anything other than Ponzi.

This is probably because of the decline in value of the bitcoin. Its volatile nature can surely cause some loss for the company.

BitcoinSN - The Real Bitcoin!!!

Interesting... I am not sure how I feel about it. Will there be a better solution in the future?

Expedia being a big and giant company in the travel industry and i am sure that it might have affected heavily to those people who were interested in traveling through the bitcoins. There are still people in the world who would love to travel through Bitcoin transactions rather than cash or any other payment mode. I doubt whether they might not introduce any crypto coin for the traveling industry which might be a big investment for their business. Let's see what it does in coming weeks.

Christie Hudson - Expedia Communications Director North America explained:
I can confirm that as of May 10, 2018, Expedia will no longer support Bitcoin as a payment method. At the moment, we do not feel that we can provide the best experience for Bitcoin customers. At the same time, we will continue to look at the different options available to provide our customers with the best payment solution.

Expedia.com  is one of the world's largest travel sites offering online booking services for flights, hotels and car rental companies that discontinue Bitcoin (BTC) acceptance as a payment vehicle.  Expedia has also accepted Bitcoin payments in recent years since 2014.
According to information provided by a Reddit member of bowiestar, bitcoin payment facilities have been removed since June 10. Bowiestar is talking about customer support services for Expedia travel agents.

Steam has been removed Bitcoin payment in early December because they know much about Bitcoin influence that changes in each second, which make both of them are loss at a certain percentage of the actual amount, due to the Bitcoin price change. They might just know the risk for applying Bitcoin payment for their site since it is a travel booking, which is very needed in everyday needs.

PRIVATE FEDERATED BLOCKCHAIN
Nearly all merchants have abandon bitcoin because Blockstream tried that bullshit takeover and made the fees skyrocket.  Then Bitcoin became totally unusable.  Blockstream wants it to be unusable for merchants.  Even today, they don't want bitcoin used this way.  Of course Expedia is going to quit.  Blockstream wants them to quit.  According to Blocksream/Core this is not the correct way to use a blockchain.

So - using the system is not encouraged.  It is only reasonable that Expedia and other no longer use it.  Why would you want them to use it?
I personally want it, because it will increase the price of bitcoin in the future, but all the decisions are on Expedia, they have the fullest right to decide

Yep, I confirm Expedia removed Bitcoin because Coinbase decided to remove the merchant tools to focus on Coinbase commerce. Expedia is not the only one, CheapAir removed Coinbase and changed it for Bitpay. Maybe Expedia will follow, it takes more time than CheapAir since both companies aren't the same size.
The volatility or the "poor performance" of Bitcoin has nothing to do. Most companies/merchants convert the bitcoins to fiat automatically, only 15% keep it to bitcoin but it's because these merchants are Bitcoin enthusiast or betting on the market price

The extreme volatility may be the reason behind this decision. We need a tech settlement partner who can convert bitcoins to fiat money in real time based on the prevailing market price. The delay in settlement time can cause major loss to the accepting merchant and that is the main bottleneck that is stopping bitcoin's adoption.

However, looking at the growth in interest of using digital money for payment of goods and services, they will eventually have to bring it back in future. As more settlement businesses like bitpay emerges, the market scenario will drastically change overtime.

They were already using Coinbase, at no point they were getting BTC  directly.

It's a normal reaction when the coin is performing poorly, and the business would like to avoid any losses accompanied in dealing with such a currency. Steam also did the same thing when the coin began to fall; they remove the bitcoin option in paying for their games since they really have no incentive in using the said payment option. This wouldn't likely affect bitcoin prices at all, considering that most people are focused in using the coin as an investment rather than a currency, so yep, it might cause a weak blow in the price but it isn't likely to sustain.

Neither Steam or Expedia dropped BTC because of the prices.
They were using 3rd party payments network for those, Steam dropped it because of the high fees that were above the average game purchase

Quote
In the past few months we've seen an increase in the volatility in the value of Bitcoin and a significant increase in the fees to process transactions on the Bitcoin network. For example, transaction fees that are charged to the customer by the Bitcoin network have skyrocketed this year, topping out at close to $20 a transaction last week (compared to roughly $0.20 when we initially enabled Bitcoin). Unfortunately, Valve has no control over the amount of the fee. These fees result in unreasonably high costs for purchasing games when paying with Bitcoin. The high transaction fees cause even greater problems when the value of Bitcoin itself drops dramatically.

and Expedia dropped it because Coinbase is no longer offering this service.
They might switch to Bitpay ...but who knows.

...

High fees definitely didn't help with adoption and did drive some merchants away, but fees have been pretty low for the last couple of months.

The real reason was likely that only tiny % of bookings was made with bitcoins + their payment processor - Coinbase reportedly decided to discontinue custodial services for merchants.

Coinbase changed their mind and stop supporting custodial service for merchants because they are now big and don't care about merchants.
Cheapair already changed payment processor so expedia might be also searching for new processor right now but there is also chance that expedia might not be getting enough customers booking with bitcoin so they simply dropped out the option to not bear any extra problem related to handling and exchanging bitcoin.  Wink

I am kind of indifferent about it because I didn't even know they accept bitcoin to book for their services. On their own part, I am sure its something they would have given adequate thought before discontinuing the service which they would have also put into consideration the amount of revenue they would be losing for that course of action. For those commenting they would lose revenue, of course they would but two things are important to consider in this scenario

1. What is the amount of revenue they will be losing in relation to their entire revenue? If its just a fraction they can do without, then I don't see them having any difficulty in arriving at this decision.

2. Sometimes in the life of a business the monetary costs might be minimal compared to other pressure the company might be facing behind close doors. For a company with several international presence and affiliations like this, its more complex than we usually see which I feel would play an important part here. Anyway, its a decision and not a rule which means it can be reviewed anytime and there are other options to choose from which is why I won't sweat over this.

They will change their mind once crypto becomes more mainstream.  They will lose out on a lot of customers if they don't accept crypto. It's most likely due to the large swings in price.  It can be annoying to get paid in btc and then one week later your money is only worth half the amount.  Prices will become more stable though once btc is accepted everywhere.

I bet they will come back to crypto payments in a few years, don't worry.

Definitely agree. They will just need to find a good reliable crypto payments processor and in a few years of development we will have one. The crypto scene is still very young nowadays.
