I don't know if this one has been mentioned yet, but I would really recommend "The Killing". The US remake was OK, but the original Danish version was just superb. Seasons 1 and 2 anyway; for me, season 3 was not quite as good.
Don't read any spoilers or plot summaries first. Anyone who has watched it will remember the very first episode, when Theis arrives at the crime scene while he is on the phone to Pernille. I was sitting there, in a darkened room with tears rolling down my face, and I gave my daughter an extra tight hug when she went to bed that night.
Any show that can do that to you, with characters you first met approx 30 minutes earlier, is doing something very special indeed.
