Why would Twitter do that? They have sent their money by their own greedy decision. It is like asking for a compensation from a food manufacturer, when you dont like how restaurant prepared your meal. No one forced people to send money. When you see an ad on TV-shop saying "Buy this product, it has a discount only today!", do you immediately pick up a phone to make an order?
Where in the world, when the meal comes in a bad way, you can't get a refund or a compensation? If you find a strand of hair in your soup, you can ask for a refund (or at least a dessert). But yes, there will be no compensation, even though your comparison doesn't make too much sense. Tongue

Yes, you could ask for a compensation, from a restaurant (twitter account, which posted fake giveaway tweet - in our case), but not from a farmer, that delivered vegetables to the restaurant (twitter company as it self).

What twitter can do? Refund sent funds ? But how to prove a connection between twitter account and btc address (if only ask to sign a message).

I dont think thats greed, people tends to like some giveaway in any means.

"If you send me 1 bitcoin, I will send you 2 bitcoins back" - isnt participating in this kind of a trade may be considered as an act of greed?

Twitter accounts hacked so far:
- Bitcoin
- Elonmusk
- Tron
- Ripple
- Justin Sun
- Bill gates
- Coindesk
- CZ_Binance
- Gemini
- Kucoin
- Gate .io
- Coinbase
- Binance
- JeffBezos
- JoeBiden
- BarrackObama
- BillGates
- TwitterSupport

and more...

I knew there’s something wrong when I saw that “hacked tweet” from Elon Musk. Twitter is responsible for this mess and they should double down their security measures. This is why centralised platforms are vulnerable to hacking or getting compromised.

Decentralization is the key for platforms that the hackers and intruders would find it hard to breach their system. If the only way to access social media platform is through private key that you own and in a non-custodial manner, then rest assure that your account would be safe.

I bet some startups out there are encouraging themselves to start their own decentralized social network or microblogging platform. Just my opinion.

It is the side of Twitter with their loopholes for attackers to compromise prestigious accounts on their platform. On the other hand, such scam method is not new and it is applied from platform to platform.

The easy point to realise that they are scam efforts is people have to go first with some kind of funds. It is stupid to believe in such giveway that required mandatory deposits.

There are some past scams on Youtube later last year.

I dont think thats greed, people tends to like some giveaway in any means. Its just like this case is more senstive. You know those personalities tweeted are all trusted right? They just dont know that it was hacked. How can you blame them and call them greedy.

If they can prove, that hackers got other account owners personal info (passwords) by twitters security breach, than they can at least hope on something. But I'm sure that twitter layers will win case in any scenario. No one forced people to send money.
Its proven and they admit it that the problem occur on their end. Just like what TryNinja said, there is still some fault on their side which I believe people who suffer from attack at least be compensated.

No one force people to send money, right. But the material or reason why they send it is due to Twitter legit tweet from personalities. Im sure they aware if the one who announced it is fake and why the hell they would send, but in this case its the original like CZ accounts. He normally do some surprise giveaway, people got attracted cause its Cz itself that posted it.

Twitter already said that their investigation shows the 'hackers' got access to some Twitter's internal tools by social engineering their employees, so 100% their fault. If this happened with an exchange, and not with a social network, they could have been in more trouble (e.g, if people send money directly from their accounts, they would probably need to reverse them or compensate people that sent the money).

Why would CZ asked for bitcoin and doubtly he will doubled the sent amount. Its not his routine and even those used names are not even into cryptocurrency.
people are crazy and they might make unexpected tweets, Elon Musk, someone. I will believe that he doubles bitcoin if he tweets from his authenticated account, few people will do that, and some of them may be tempted to do it with small amounts.
hackers will cause losses to Twitter and will force them to change some of their rules
it may be a warning about continuing the same technical policy that you do.
This attack may have some political and economic implications more than a sabotage attack.

Twitter should compensate these people who did send. Its their credibility at stake now.

First and foremost, just remember nobody's giving you free money for nothing. If you see offers that are too good to be true, they really are so just don't bother with them. Giveaways don't ask you for money (unless there's an entry price).
Its actually tempting since the tweet comes from huge people in the industry and even recognized one. Sad to say, that victims of this hacked are really suffer from a coordinated scheme.

First social network, that fell under attacks of hackers was youtube, now twitter. Which is going to be next? I predict Instagram. Facebook is not quite popular among celebrities or famous people, tiktok is to "strange" to advertise or ask anything there, so Instagram is the only one left.

You own the pen
This will become one of the worst hacking histories on Twitter and if it's gonna damaged someone's reputation, they will be the one who gonna compensate it. I don't know how the laws work with this kind of thing but let's wait for twitter's official announcement regarding this issue. I hope no one had fallen to this kind of crap or the problem will be getting worse. When I saw Bill Gates has post this offer on how twitter page it triggers on my mind that this is no doubt a scam attempt and a massive hacking event on Twitter.

It is obvious that we need some kind of decentralized social network without single point of failure.
Only disasters like this thing that happened to twitter will make people think differently.
Same thing can happen to any service with centralized servers.
Insider job.

Recent news says that hackers convinced twitter employee to help them:

There are lies, damned lies and statistics. MTwain
The (additional) sad component is the derived association between "scam" and "Bitcoin", despite the focus being on "Twatter". The perspective from an outsider reading/listening to the media will likely unfortunately likely focus on that association, and not solely on the core elements (hacked platform and gullible people).

I heard the news on the radio this morning (regular news broadcast), and the information derivate was interesting: You sent 1k BTC and they sent you back an alleged amount of 2k BTCs

Wish for the rain? Then deal with the mud too.
That's true, it is a trending topic as of now, these twitter accounts are so big, and is owned by familiar person and groups, hoping that it wouldn't cause bad to the crypto community. Those accounts are important and I followed those accounts because it finds so useful and helpful for me especially with the news that they posted. Yhis should be fixed, I think the hackers will ask for money for the return of the accounts, that is the common things that the hackers do whenever they hacked the account of a popular person. Those accounts are important so hey will give what hackers want.

It is a one sided game if they would give in. I mean, if that's the case then they don't need to give money, they could take those accounts down from their server either way.

It is still unclear if this is an inside job or if somebody did his way in without employee's aid or whatever. Anyway, what must be fixed is getting rid of someone's unauthorize access from their server.

I feel bad for those users who deposit believing they would get something back  Undecided.

That was the first thing I saw in my Twitter notifications this morning. That the account of Binance was hacked. I thought it was the only account that was hacked but when I read the list in the op, turns out my thought was wrong. There were so many hacked accounts and I've been following most of them.

<... >

But oh boy! This is quite alarming because they are not just a common Twitter accounts, they are popular and can be effectively use for scamming. I hope the authority will act fast since not everyone of us are aware of this news.
It is indeed alarming. For someone who won't read between the lines and suspect for a moment will surely become a victim. Good thing I'm not a fan of giveaways but for those who are, they should be very careful now. "Think before you click" guys. Let's all stay safe from this kind of scheme.

Yeah, they used many known accounts to post scam giveaways for 2-3 hours and what Twitter did was to just delete these giveaway tweets at first but obviously that wasn't a good solution so after 3 hours or so they decided to make verified accounts unable to tweet for a while so that they can come up with a solution, but I think hackers had twitter as a whole in their hands and they had access to all accounts so it wasn't users fault at all.

Take a look at this one

Looks like some apps with API key on Twitter are the culprit of this attack. As there's no way to tell which apps are causing problems, might be better to revoke all apps access to your Twitter account for now.

It is unfortunate that many popular Twitter accounts have been hacked and used to scam cryptocurrency. I hope it will be possible to recover all the hacked accounts very soon but as opposed to the reason for frustration is that if any kind of information is given from the hacked accounts for some time then people will be afraid to trust news update. It is very sad if any of them have been harmed.

Jeez, seems like most of the major crypto handle has been compromised. How come they did it? Another big scam coming soon.

The strange thing is realy that people fall into this.
Not everyone falls for this. Whatever the case is, even from a verified source, we have common sense of verifying by ourselves while others just trust the words and when it comes from an authentic handle, they are sure as hell that they gonna get the amount.

Just found that post here https://medium.com/@thecryptosmurf/be-aware-big-twitter-accounts-hacked-for-giveaway-scams-c8ca5e33702d

Looks like all this Accounts got so far nearly 12 BTC with there scam on that !
The strange thing is realy that people fall into this.

Nothing in life that there is no risk taking, probably everyone should be careful when it comes to online transactions, verification and so on. Hackers ain't tried and they ain't sleeping with two eyes closed so it's best to not sleep with both eyes closed.

Yes you are right on that , and you should be checking always when doing the transactions 2 or 3 times before push the send button.

Holy sh*t, that's crazy. You can include Jeff Bezos, Apple, Gemini, Bitfinex, Cash App...

I can see a lot of people falling for those. Someone probably found a major security issue on Twitter. No way all of those people fell for a phishing scam, malware, or some other 'regular' stuff.

Twitter responded and deleted the tweets:

The moment I saw Elon Musk's twit, I knew there's something wrong already. Simple explanation, yeah it's not hard to believe that he can double the money you will give but why there's a sudden show of interest to btc Grin? Where in the first place he doesn't even show a strong support to it before.
