The amount of Bitcoin scammers has increased not decreased if you ask me because as Bitcoin grows more popular more poor people will be attracted to it looking to make a quick buck. I am in my late twenties and I am not a libertarian or a computer specialist, I am just an average joe who heard about Bitcoin and jumped on the bandwagon because it was a novel thing and I was curious. Anyhow this survey is very outdated. If it is conducted now based on this forum population I think the results will be very interesting. It is true though that most of the people posting nowadays are motivated by monetary gain due to the sig campaigns.

That sounds biased towards the United States.   Based on the users here, I'd say.Asia and Africa are well represented.   But I'd also say they got the age spot on.

I've used this forum since 2011 and that seems pretty accurate to me. Bitcoin has always been a magnet for radicals and scammers. They see new potential in bitcoin because these types of people think outside the box. The average boring person conforms with current standards never straying very far from the mainstream. Anarchists, radicals, libertarians, scammers, criminals, entrepreneurs, idealists, oddballs or whatever you want to call them exist outside the mainstream and are always searching for something new to further their agenda.

There used to be one other group that seems to have died out some. The something awful/buttcoin/professional troll crowd was at least a quarter of the forums membership at one point. Every other avatar you'd see was a my little pony character. Even the buttcoin foundation site hasn't had a new post since 2015. I see that as a very bad sign. When you aren't important enough to make fun of anymore - you're history.

I have to say, you got it spot on friend... Things have definitely changed and more and more average and normal {if you can call them that} people have entered the scene,

since it's strong Libertarian past. I think this has changed, when the Bitcoin price reached it's $1000+ price and more people started to take it seriously. The radicals and the

scammers are still around, but those people are also participating in the fiat area too. I get the feel that Bitcoin has been commercialized now... everything is about money now.

Again I just want to stress the research in the piece comes from a survey conducted here in 2013  Grin

That means how people are represented in the article is derived from how the people here see themselves.

Yeah, bitcoiners have changed since 2013. Fewer criminals, fewer traders, now mostly third-worlders spamming sigs & gambling away their 'earnings' on bitcoin dice sites.
Progress.

Indeed, imagine doing that survey now. We'd have so many people just responding with those random 'clearly in a sig campaign' responses that effect so many threads here. Gambling, ack.

the basic types of investors are the same as on any currency market:

- speculators / traders
- investors / savers
- people who use bitcoins for transfers
- people who use bitcoins for payments

So true in my opinion. Some people believe in bitcoin and recognize the potential value of that coin in future, I'm one of them. I don't think I belong to any specific type. Just ordinary guy, with ordinary life trying to make things easier and nicer.

Yes, it's the same for me, and I think for the most BTC users here.
We are not special at all, and it's difficult to put us in some categories.
We are probably mix of all this 4 types Smiley
It's wrong that some people talk and giving opinions about something they don't understand fully.
If they did some serious research, than, maybe, their opinions will be relevant.

I think, except for believing in the potential of bitcoin, a bitcoiner is just like another non-bitcoiners, including those who hate bitcoins.

Good stuff, I was always a very "average bitcoiner" and from the article still am. Smiley

Liked the dark web/deep web stuff, many people get it wrong, even tech savvy ones.

Me too, the hat fits me for sure.

I've used this forum since 2011 and that seems pretty accurate to me.

But so what? Let's not generalize always. Any other forum can have the same amout of distribution of wild people. There are communist and nazi forums on the internet... why nobody exposes those people?

These types of news make the sheeps scared, and they will pee in their pants when they read news like this.

Then they wont join bitcoin. And these types of news hurt bitcoin's PR.

Too bad bitcoin is not a formal entity, otherwise we should ask for reparations, because they just clearly attack bitcoin's reputation.

Well it comes down to the data. The first few lines are a bit over-the-top, but the break down is what flowed from the survey and Google Trends so this is what this community said they were when analysed. I actually think it reads pretty fairly especially if you go down toward the end.

Indeed, a massive part of this forum is its Wild West-ness barely moderated vibe.

I`m tired when the mainstream media demonizes bitcoin. That group analysis is true for any group, including their fucking audience. So what you will find all kinds of bad people that read even that newspaper.

This is a shitty article that serves nothing, but to demonize bitcoin. Stupid journalists!
I do agree with you that journalists will start to write shit when they are run out of ideas of what to write about Bitcoin.
