Since I'm from Croatia, it is always interesting for me to look at the results of clubs from the region, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia ...
Out of almost 30 clubs at the beginning of the competition, only 4 clubs remained, Dinamo, Zvezda, Rijeka and Sarajevo.
No club remained in the Champions League.
It seems to me that this is a big drop and very disappointing results because until recently Dinamo, Partizan and Zvezda had very good results in European competitions, they regularly played in the group stage of the Champions League etc.
It is obvious that these clubs are slowly losing pace with richer and better organized clubs from other countries.
Yeah, this season isn't very good for this region teams. Zvezda lost to obviously weaker team on paper, while Dinamo Zagreb haven't managed to beat similar level opponent. Money probably isn't main problem this time because they haven't lost against big teams with huge budgets. I think one of the main reasons of such results is weak local leagues. Team like Crvena Zvezda or Dinamo Zagreb have just 1-2 powerful opponents in their leagues, while rest of time they have to play against parked bus in general. After this they aren't ready to play different style footbal in Champions league.
Okay, I don't really follow the Serbian league, so I can't say, but as far as Dinamo is concerned, nothing has changed in the last few years.
Dinamo dominate the Croatian league almost every year and have no real competition but that still didn't stop them from entering the group stage of the Champions League last year and be very close to the pass of the group and the year before they passed the group in the European football league.
Even the players are pretty much the same this year so it seems to me that the main reason for Dinamo's failure in this year's Champions League competition is the change of coach and the poor atmosphere around the club.
I'm almost convinced that with Bjelica as coach Dinamo would have entered the group stage of the Champions League this season.
However, given the luck in the draw, even such Dinamo has a good chance of winning the group stage of the Europa League this season as a consolation prize
