I can't find anything like this in Japanese media either, and I've been looking.

This may be a misunderstanding of this CNBC article:

A small protest outside the offices of Mt Gox has been ongoing since last Friday. Two Mt Gox customers, including former software developer Kolin Burges, have traveled to Japan in the hope of retrieving their bitcoins and finding out more details of the trading halt.

Burges told CNBC via telephone that there had been implications that the protest had been the reason for Mt Gox's move, with an angry landlord threatening to expel the company. However, Burges said he didn't believe this to be the case and considered that the company may have been the subject of a more formal physical threat from users with large deposits at Mt Gox.

"Nobody is really sure of what is going on," he said. "I have seen a couple of large security guards at the offices all day today."

There are other articles based on that article, some not too clear. After a few rewrites and translations, something like the original poster's rumor may have emerged.

Xubu, it would seem you have likely been misinformed. Do you speak or read Japanese?

A search of the Asahi Shinbun site yields only this article, from Feb 18: http://www.asahi.com/tech_science/cnet/CCNET35044044.html

Also, a google news search  for Mt Gox 引き出し (withdrawal) 停止 (halt) gives nothing much more.

I reckon your friend, or you, are full of shit. Prove me wrong.
I speak several languages, but not Japanese  Roll Eyes. The language spoken in the game channel is English. I have an amount off BTC on Gox so i really hope i am misinformed. But as said earlier the guys were really serious on this, so i am really worried.

death threats?

I hope that's not true.  People can mock & humiliate Mark as much as they want, it's a natural response of frustration.
But death threats is a whole new level.
IF Mark gets beaten, or worse, now THAT would be bad news to the community.

bitcoins represent money.
People all over the world get death threats or even worse, seriously injured or killed over money.

Why would Karpeles or bitcoin be any different? Especially since we are talking about large sums of money.

Here is an example of stuff that is out there http://www.mtgoxtakeover.com/?q=msg.

You will be found sooner or later and then they will punish you.

...

If this situation will be handled down in a serious way, nobody will kill you.

And this was written by someone who used a real name and who posts on this forum.

Horrible.

I don't like the warmongering attitude here.  I'm not sympathizing with Mark Karpeles but he's innocent until proven guilty.
Yes, he has to go to prison if he broke any laws.
NO, to people who would applaud to a criminal that takes justice in his own hands.

What do you mean by "or worse"? If you mean killed, then that would be bad because it really doesn't help anything, or do much to punish Mark. I would prefer to see him put in prison (rape cage). While most people in rape cages never even victimized anyone, Mark has victimized a slew of people. Being in prison will give him time to think about what a dick he's been.

This. Don't understand why people are sympathising with him for what he's done.

Maybe the OP can explain why there are no links in his post and I cannot find any reference to this in Google news?

Various japanese media spread negative news in their late evening journals on the situation about Mt.Gox. They talked short about the death threats and protests against Mark Karpeles. Then they came up with a recorded (hacked?) phone call from insiders at Mt.Gox.

In the phone call was made clear that the company is unable to provide all users to withdraw their Bitcoins, and it therefore prefers to pay out everyone in fiat.

The company would announce the news to the public on Monday morning (Tokyo Time).

I wonder what impact this will have on the bitcoin community.

Cheers
