I can only imagine the headlines when this story is picked up by mainstream as "protocol vulnerability found" - bummer it's probably (but hopefully not) going to get blown out of proportion.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Available Now!
So are they bullshitting or is this really an issue with the protocol?

We have discussed this solution with the Bitcoin core developers and will allow Bitcoin withdrawals again once it has been approved and standardized.
Yeah, so, what's the ETA on that? Roll Eyes

Shouldn't there be a github issue open?

The wording of the statement sure has them trying to spread the blame to the entire protocol ...

Sounds like they had some coins stolen because their system doesn't inventory its bitcoins properly.

Assuming the gox fix works, (and exists of course) Gox BTC are going to be worth a lot more than GoxBux, especially being so cheap. We are going to get a massive spike in the Gox price, which will drag up all the other exchanges. I'd be anxious if I was short at the moment, this represents a significant risk if you stop including the bear trolls in your risk assment and see how likely it is to happen.

unless they  want to get out in cash, which means a race to the bottom ...?

That's what's happening right now... once ppl can get coins out the price will only go up as everyone runs for the nearest exit.

Conclusion
To put things in perspective, it's important to remember that Bitcoin is a very new technology and still very much in its early stages. What MtGox and the Bitcoin community have experienced in the past year has been an incredible and exciting challenge, and there is still much to do to further improve.

MtGox will resume bitcoin withdrawals to outside wallets once the issue outlined above has been properly addressed in a manner that will best serve our customers.

More information on the status of this issue will be released as soon as possible.

We thank you for taking the time to read this, and especially for your patience.

Best Regards,
MtGox Team
