Unless you put more than 24k per year on a vehicle, you can't really go wrong with a lease these days. You only pay sales tax when you make the monthly payment and you're only paying interest on the value of the car minus the residual. I'm just finishing up a 3 year least and deciding whether I want to buy it out or go for a newer model... they've beefed up the engine a bit and this may be the last time I'll ever be able to buy a gasoline-powered vehicle.
I tend to buy a 10 year old car with cash. By doing this with every car it feels like I am getting a lot of upgraded features with every new purchase.
I paid $11k for my last car, which is close to what I've paid for most of my cars. I've spent about $1k for repairs in the past year. If I sold it now, I would be able to sell it for close to $10-11k (actually, more as I got a great deal thanks to COVID).
