Because the exchanges that use them aren't as hardy and established as Mt. Gox.
The irony here is that the LTC/USD rate has been more stable lately than the BTC/USD one. And none of the exchanges requires you to send in a ID.
One does not need to send in id to trade buttcoins with lameocoins. Play money does not count. Sad but true.
