In recent history 6.4 was the norm then quickly shot up to 9.2. From their it went all the way up to 15. But the motivation for that may have been solely on market speculation and other factors I will not bring up.
The motivation now may be speculation related to the upcoming reward reduction by 50% has not been priced in at $11 for every BTC.
Another factor to consider is people buying up BTC instead of investing in hardware that never came before the reward halving.
This is all speculation as to the recent rise in BTC value.
