. . . This is totally frustrating though! I am on DAY 3 of just trying to finish the installation. One thing that would have been really helpful would have been if the software had given some kind of warning that we are talking about DAYS here, not minutes as with other software. But it continued on as if it was the most natural thing in the world for a software installation to take HOURS, if not days. I have 20,000 bits left and it's running slower than 1/second, so I won't be done until tomorrow if all else is equal . . .
Is there a specific reason that you chose to use the Reference Client that downloads the full blockchain instead of one of the "light" clients such as MultiBit or Electrum?  Did you consider using the blockchain.info online wallet?  Is there a reason you decided against it?

Use a lightweight client like MultiBit. You start it and it's ready to go.

No one ever said that the standard client is the one the masses should use.

It had actually hung. The green bar did not show and rebooting the program any amount of times did not help.
I cleared out the data from "AppData" and started from scratch.
It gave an error code and stopped again later on, but that time, just rebooting the program made it continue from where it had been.

Download a fully synced blockchain, that's what I did.
It worked pretty well for me.
I did that, but after it loaded and opened the client (took forever) I noticed that it was further back than I had been in the synching process the regular way. So I reverted to the ongoing sync.

I don't see bitcoin catching on with the masses unless this gets resolved! Regular people will assume there is "a virus" or that the program "is broken".

Patience indeed, when the little green icon in the bottom right corner turns green the sync is complete.

It takes hours and hours to synce even on a fast machine.

I am trying to set up bitcoin for the first time, but I think I've triggered a bug or a problem.
The wallet just won't finish syncing. I've tried re-installing (although I didn't clean out everything, just did the installation one more time).

It's hanging at the block that's referred in the screen tip text below.

This is preventing me from starting to use bitcoins... What should I do?
