WASTE is pretty decent, for a small scale p2p network.  Alliance is another program in this realm.  Although I liked WASTE better, Alliance has a nice feature of hashing all of your shared files so that it can compare that to your friends, and allow downloading the same file from multiple people: kinda like torrents.

Waste has huge issues with the small p2p networks 'joining' an becoming too large.

In school, we had an on campus waste network... it was a little slow, but we had a fast network, so it was tolerable.  There was lots of good music available if you could sift through the porn.

Well, anonymous networks are a theme of itself. I never tested it, but Freenet, I2P, Tor and Syndie.

I like Tor a lot Smiley

me too... Tor is a great project. At one point I even run the second largest tor exit server in the world for a month or so, with about 150 Mbps bandwidth.

Nice! Very generous of you. I'd do the same if I had a beefy connection.

It sucks though that Tor won't accept donations in bitcoins. You'd figure they would the ideal people to realize the privacy and security advantages of bitcoin.

I found this neat little program called "WASTE" while looking for a decentralized p2p chat program. It supports encryption and you don't need to worry about any 3rd party logging any information. This is very useful if you require being anonymous. This has been abandoned for like 3 years now but it still works great.
you can find it at http://wasteagain.sourceforge.net/

Try it out by putting this IP in the network status window, 75.130.209.187
you may need to forward port 1337 for it to work.

And please post if there are any known flaws or something with it.

Cheesy love the port number..hahahaha...

If you wish to be truly uber 1337 you'd write your won daemon that listens on that port number and forwards all data/requests to /dev/null Smiley
