These guys are all very naive; this nation is a joke (much like sealand), it's founded in an area where not much economic activity will occur due to constant flooding (why none of the larger political entities surrounding want it), and even if there was, they'd get sucked into the neighboring nations very easily since, even if they had a military, it wouldn't match up to a larger nation's military.  Not even larger nations are completely sovereign; America says jump, many smaller nations ask "How high?"

Anyway, cool display of protest nonetheless; I'm sure they'll get to keep their spot since it's not gonna be a threat to any existing power structures, plus the added bonus of people believing they're freer than they really are: "just look, you can go make your own nation too if you wanted, it'll just suck really bad so you may as well stay put."

There are so many micro nations but none have got any major recognition, lets see if Liberland does anything different to get some legitimacy, micronations have been formed for so many years but none got any big recognition or funding or any good  infrastructure or healthy economy.
You can find  here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_micronations a list of micronations but none have claimed any significance in the global presence yet

What if... All those micro nations would adopt Bitcoin as their currency and have Liberland their BUN (Bitcoin United Nations)...

That will be cool but very unlikely that would happen Smiley

Your country may be your worst enemy
7 sq.km is actually quite a lot of area. Remember that countries such as Vatican and Monaco are much smaller when compared to Liberland. Comparing Monaco to Liberland, the latter is having almost 4 times more area. And right now, Monaco is home to some 30,000 people. Therefore, Liberland is capable of accommodating up to 100,000 people.

Monaco has a Prince, the Vatican has a pope, both have centuries of history, monuments and beautiful people. What has Liberland besides mosquitoes? It would take billions to make a nice place out of Liberland, and then Serbia or Croatia would just claim everything is their property. I like the idea of creating a new country, but I don't see it as possible within Europe.

Well, at least the spot is on a place where you can survive, unlike Bir Tawil. Mosquitos? People live in the Danube Delta, and with some spray I didn't find it bothersome there.

But they will face a funny dilemma. The sanctity of private property is in the short manifesto, but the Liberlanders don't own any piece of the land. Imagine they get their state recognized, but all their land is owned by the Republic of Croatia, and they won't allow anyone to enter it..,

This looks like a country heading for disaster, think about it, you wouldn't put your life savings in Bitcoin.

They're basing their entire economy on Bitcoin, too volatile.

Volatility doesn't affect anything if everything is in that same currency .  And they don't have any economy yet . Smiley

So they only have to get the rest of the world to switch to bitcoin and they should be fine!

Shouldn't the first step be buying everything to make that land more livable for all, then focus on the rest? Maybe it's time to bring some natural predators first then bring the big chemical guns then... All bought in bitcoin of course

Hopeless thing. There are plenty of similar areas around, so if you get rid of the mosquitoes on one spot, more will come to grab those vacant bushes.

nice analogy, respect them and they will be cool... (the mosquitoes, for the non human there is only death).

They have a good chance to form a country. The mosquitoes there would be able to suck dry any army what would try to recover that land Smiley.

Very true Cheesy . That land there has loads of them and also it was never treated against mosquitoes not by Serbia and not by Croatia Cheesy .

They took good interest as yesterday Czech number one TV "Nova" show reportage about Liberland. It was in evening prime time. They explain basic and mentioned Bitcoin as well. Last moment they update number of citizens who apply to be Liberland citizens grow to some thousand people now.
It`s clear they getting very popular.

Yeah they also had rly good coverage in Serbian media to.

I don't think Serbia will have anything against that new "republic" but im starting to think they just want to get some money and abandon it.

There is one good thing with all this thou. More people will hear about bitcoin till this happened bitcoin was never mentioned in Serbian media.

I'm sure if they allow themselves to be continually shaken down by Serbia or Croatia then they'll be allowed to stay in operation. Either that, or form an alliance w/ one or the other and see how things go. It's a free state project for Europe for those that can't make the US version in NH.

This looks like a nice little scam they're running. Convince people to you're a country and then accept donations from people gullible enough to literally buy into it. Their public bank account (https://www.fio.cz/scgi-bin/hermes/dz-transparent.cgi?ID_ucet=2800402875) currently shows that people have given them 36,598.31 Czech Koruny ($1400) in a few days. Not bad!

So much for crypto though I guess.
