1. Dogecoin - The community is amazing, and the potential is huge. Proof? Compare its growth with any other coin in 7 weeks
2. Litecoin - Seems quite undervalued, and has a lot of potential to be easily integrated with all the merchants, businesses and services currently accepting bitcoin
3. Bitcoin - The one and only, also undervalued, but this year looks very promissing, especially with the news of Overstock and Tigerdirect
4. Vertcoin - An interesting response to Scrypt-ASICs, i'm keeping my eye on it
5. Pesetacoin - As a spanish, this one brings back so many fond memories Smiley Let's see if it manages to conquer the spanish market, especially as an underground alternative to the Euro, as the austerity continues to take its toll

As a redditor and crypto-enthusiast, I love Dogecoin. But as an Economist, and more importantly investor, I don't see Doge as maintaining its PER COIN price. It's market cap may be stable and go up, but investors will lose money. Need a further explanation on the difference in per coin and market cap fluctuations? Just ask me.

My reasoning for Doge's dropping per coin price is the amount of NEW money it needs daily. QRK will go down in price if it doesn't receive 800 NEW $ a day AT its current price. Doge will go down in price if it doesn't receive 1.3 million NEW $ a day AT its current price. (For reference, BTC needs 3 million and LTC needs 500k a day).

This makes Quark attractive in my mind, with the initial mining phase over, there is very little capital dilution going forward.

Doge has a great community, but it mints millions of coins everyday.  And with pools like middlecoin, all they do is mine and dump on the exchange.  So like Zzzack said, it takes a lot of new capital to buy up these mined/dumped coins to maintain the price.   This can be said of most scrypt coins, same with EAC, decent community but mining schedule/distribution is very expensive/flawed.

Also, ASIC scrypts are coming onto the scene most likely this year, which will shut the little guy out of mining scrypt coins and accelerate this problem.

Quark doesnt have this issue Smiley

Other coins I'd invest in are

LTC - this is the scrypt coin that will continue to beat out all others.
WDC - scharmbeck coming online, decent community.
maxcoin - coming out soon
LPC - possible sleeper coin, that could rise
2.0  - either nxt, emunie, or ether(horrible IPO structure) - emunie seems the best at the moment.

you should try some second gen. crypto, if NXT will have those promised features, it could become hit, its clones too. Right now it is extremely cheap as all of them are already created, and share holders are selling them constantly, once they sold what they have, it could go up.

Quark
Litecoin
Zerocoin
Peercoin
Namecoin

I agree with Quark and PPC strongly, and LTC is a good conservative coin. Zerocoin has potential but I don't see it making top 5 necessarily.

But whats with Namecoin? I feel like that one is dying out. Do you have reasons for it?

Not really, i actually couldn't come up with any other coin that is top 5 worthy lol

ONLY invest in coins that have merchant adoption. Bitcoin, litecoin, and DOGE. Why would you support the useless consumption of hardware mining if other coins have no merchant acceptance. These coins are posing a serious threat to the USP of crypto currency. Think about it, what the f*** is Globalcoin or RonPaul going to serve you if you own it, besides speculation and scams. Stick to the real momentum, and only support merchant adopted coins. It's the only way.

Agree if you're looking for medium and long-term investment. However, BTC, LTC and DOGE aren't the only ones that have merchant adoption. You may also want to look at new coins like Noble, Digibyte and USDe.

My list of established alt coins in no particular order:

Litecoin
Dogecoin
Quarkcoin
Zetacoin
Worldcoin
