ETH merge just got postponed already, this was direct from one of the ETH dev on the Twitter platform, in fact, no exact date after June he said, probably a few months later 😆 lol @Philipma prediction is motion, now let's give rest to all the 'what's going to happen after PoS on ETH' questions lol...keep mining.

folks,

it seems that Nvidia GPUs are available everywhere. 3070, 3080, and 3090.

my local micro center has a bunch in stock.

I'm about to buy a few, but hesitant to add more rigs. anyone know why so many video cards are available?

You can see that miners have stopped buying video cards in bulk since the beginning of 2022, because the payback period is very long.
Even if the transition to the POS algorithm is a little delayed, now is not the best time to buy.

The merge is coming, miners aren't buying graphic cards as before and mining profitability is also down, what do you expect? Also new graphic cards are coming out from Nvidia and AMD, even intel ARC gpus are on the way, prices will fall in a few more months, now is not a good time to buy GPUs.

I've ordered 6 gtx1660 from Alibaba with 1800$, I know GPU price can still drop more but I'm not ready to bet on that because ETH merge might comes with new problems so there for making the team to postpone it again.

Lol true but the idea of mining ETH and get 1 ETH with your Miner still active is better, this way you get more ETH after making your 1 ETH back.
Yeah buddy, do I look like a rookie miner? Grin Grin I'm more like retired miner.

I can use 2500$ to buy 8x rx580 8GB graphic cards right now, there are no cheaper cards than this but if the electricity bill is high it's better to stick with rtx3060s or RX6600XT but you get a lower hash rate anyways.
Right, the prices very much depends on your location. RX400 and RX500 series are good old cards, still probably profitable but not for all. You can get them over 30MH/s at around 100W (of course it can be better, but be realistic). You have to do the math.
Also when buying used cards do proper cleaning! Then fast test on some cheap computer it might blow your PSU if the card is shorted (otherwise check for shorts first), if all good repaste them with good thermal paste and maybe also new thermalpads (not necessary most of the time). I use Artic MX-4, because it's cheap and pretty good, it won't get much better with very expensive thermal paste.
I remember buying new RX470 4GB in like 2017 for something over 150 USD because nobody wanted them Cheesy Cheesy

Go to a store nearby and get a RTX3090Ti for 2000$ (135MH) and use the remaining 500$ on an RTX 2060 or gtx 1660 super, your hashrate will be 160+MH max, your max power consumption will be under 500 watts.

I would choose efficiency over hash rate any day, a rx580 use up to 120watt from the wall and an RX6600XT use 60watt from the wall and they both produce the same 30ish hash rate, as you can see RX6600XT is better for long term mining than rx580, always go with the most efficient GPU's.

In Feb 2021 I built a mining rig with 6 MSI 1660 that costs me 2500$ with motherboard and a 850watt power supply my question is what can this 2500$ built this 2022?
If you live in the USA, then you can buy the same thing for the same money, or the RTX 1660 super a little more expensive. According to forecasts, less than 3 months until the end of Ethereum mining, are you sure you want to buy video cards? I think that in most countries prices will fall every month and your profit will be less than the loss from falling prices.

you can buy 5 evga 2060 12 gb cards. 5 x 440 = 220

and get a mobo and a psu 5 x 30 = 150 mhs burns about 500 watts

or buy 3 rtx a2000 12 gb for 2400 and get a mobo and a psu about 3 x 39 = 117 mhs burns under 300 watts

On whattomine the net gain by mining eth of a 1660 is about $ 2.80 then multiplied by 6 is about $ 17 a day, today the best solution with $ 2500 is to buy 5 3060 that cost about $ 2500 produce perhaps a little less earning but they are more recent

For $2500 in the US you can build a full six card RX 6600 rig if you choose your parts wisely in the past few days.

Those 1660 still beats rx580 when it comes to efficiency, a micron and Hynix base 1660 can deliver 27MH and takes only 50watts using Trex miner absolute core clock to lock the CC at 1300.
Look at the review of any reputable miner. The consumption of this video card from the wall is ~ 70 watts. Rx580 consumes 95-105 watts from the wall and gives a hashrate of 30-31 megahash. For me it's about the same now.But both video cards have very little prospects after ethereum.

1 x rtx 3090 and be happy with it, in 2016 you could buy almost 20 rx 470.
115MH with 2500$?? That's not so good, using other small GPU's you will get over 170MH for the money that's the way to go, also 3090s and their heat issue which also affects mining performance is a big no for me, I will never buy that card.

Go with the cheapest build possible, even gtx1060 6GB build would do because the way things are going now mining profitability will decrease a lot so to get by you need a higher hash rate, 120$ per rx580 graphic cards is still coming, imagine how many rx580 you will get with 2500$.
The GTX 1060 or RX 580 are bad choices for the long term because they're very inefficient. After PoS, power efficiency will be critical because revenue will be 5-10x lower than now. The minimum efficiency I would buy would be the RX 6000 series.
That's what you think, what about those that have built green energy already? Their aims will be higher hash rates, those gtx1060 won't cost less than 70$ in the bear market likewise rx570 and 580s.
rx570, 580s and gtx1060 are good for mining firium and ethereum classic, Ergo(ERG) and Ravencoin(RVN). If the profit on these coins is close to the cost of electricity, then these video cards will not buy miners, because it is better to buy the latest series at recommended prices.
