You don't have to buy what others are buying, do your own research means increasing your own capability to make decisions yourself, this makes you stronger than ever, just because some people don't like a project doesn't mean you should do the same, some times, you can see something that others are not seeing, it's like people calling some projects shitcoins and these so called shitcoins did so well than every other projects they feel it's better, learn to do your own research and take your own risks.

Some of us started to invest in bitcoins even without doing our own research, we just followed what we were told by our friends.

Alot of us are in this category, not just some. We felt those before us were already experts and whatever they said was right. It was okay with bitcoin but most of the altcoins we bought blindly destroyed our investment. It was a painful experience for most of us. Research before investment is important. With that you will know before hand what you are getting into and when it goes wrong you do not have anyone to blame.

- What does it  mean it actually mean to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?
DYOR is not a specific acronym for crypto, it is a common acronym that people often used throughout the internet ecosystem.
As far as I know, DYOR means "we must do analysis/research ourselves, and decide what the conclusion ourselves".

Commonly, people state DYOR after they deliver their opinion or tell their experience to others. Why do they state "DYOR"? It is because it may work for themselves but no guarantee to work effectively with others. For example, I am successful with a day trading strategy but others may fail using the same strategy. It can be caused by the different characteristics of the individual. So, when I am telling you that day trading is the most effective strategy, it cannot guarantee that you will be successful as well. It depends on many factors, including personal nature/characteristics. At the end of the day, everyone must do their own analysis to know which strategy will fit them.

- What are the steps to start to take? Technical analysis? Fundamental analysis? Sentimental analysis?
All are needed. But which one is the most important? It depends on what to be analyzed.

- How did you or do you DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ?
If it is about analyzing a potential project, I analyze it from all the crucial aspects. I analyze the team members, its products/MVP, community, social media, partnerships, its usecase, the road map, the whitepaper, and many others. We need to analyze the whole aspects of the projects, so we can conclude whether the project deserves to invest in or not. How to get the information about the whole aspect? We can look for the information ourselves. Google, check out the official site, visit their social media channels, and so on!!

No dream is too big and no dreamer is too small
Do Your Own Research, or DYOR, is one of the first acronyms that every newcomer to cryptocurrencies and bitcoin in particular will learn. I've given this a lot of thought because, from personal experience, I mistakenly dabbled in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and do not know if I actually DYOR. I learned most of what I know from older colleagues, to whom I listened for hours on end. They also provided me with some kind of semi-mentoring, which would entail answering my questions as the market's figures changed from green to red in the mid of the night. Well, the questions I am trying to find answers to from this forum are:

- What does it  mean it actually mean to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?
- What are the steps to start to take? Technical analysis? Fundamental analysis? Sentimental analysis?
- How did you or do you DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ?
Do Your Own Research means you have to dig the information deeply so you can come up with a new valuable and effective information, those that are based on facts and not just any feedback made by a disclaimer or a person who just want to influence others. And by doing a good research, we should always know the specific problem or the target that needs clarity or verification so that we will not be misled from our research. And since everything we need to know is all over the internet now, then all we should do is just to filter those that are fake and misleading information, and focus on the legit resources that will give us the correct and legit information. And one great example of this is the bitcointalk forum itself.

- What does it  mean it actually mean to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?
The phrase implies that it is your responsibility to do your research and use result from your research for any purpose. Generally explaining, don't trust projects, don't trust other people, trust yourself.

You discussed about trading and it is not wrong but DYOR means more about researches to find information about a project, assess its legitimacy and quality. From that you can get your own view on potential of that project and make your decision to join (invest or trade).

Technical, fundamental, sentimental analytics are parts of DYOR you can do.

I do it on their website first with tokenomics. If I find that tokenomics is desgined poorly and has potential of rug pull, I stop.

Next step I would like to do is searching about their team members. Their achievements before they joined crypto and their achievements related with cryptocurrency.

Their whitepaper, lightpaper, roadmap are what I do later because those documents are full of promises.

"Do your own research" is a phrase people say to waive any responsibility after giving financial advice. People who can do their own research don't need a reminder and probably don't read the type of posts that tell them to. And the rest just can't do it properly, and they might not even realize this and think that reading articles and social media posts from shills is research. That's how typical crypto investors end up buying shitcoins.

It's actually a very easy term, DYOR (do your own research) simply means taking your time to search for information about something you intend to do. It's mostly involved in investments so it basically same thing as learning everything there's is to know about a certain project before one invest his/her money in it. and by so doing you tend to probability of you falling for a project that has nothing to offer since you now know indepth about that project.

I think you should get it by now on what was DYOR means.

The above replies are already saying that you should take your time to understand everything about of particular coin that you want to invest plus you should have to consider the market and everything about of that coin. It applies the same to something that you don't understand too.

That phrase just means that you should do it on your own without blaming the others because you understand the risk but you still continue anyway. It's like reading a ToS but you still agree despite of what you read. I hope you get the term. Cheesy

- What does it  mean it actually mean to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?

in the simplest terms, don't blindly believe everything you read. no matter how good something that someone suggested or offered looks to you, however, do a personal check to see if it is really so. Most of the information that first comes to us is often biased or does not show potential flaws, very often because of the possible benefit of the one who publishes such information.

use the internet, and check all things and not only bolded text. Also, try to find the same thing on a completely different source, then compare. Learn to recognise fake feedbacks who are there to mislead you.
in the end, even if you make a mistake, which is completely normal, at least you know that you made a decision based on your personal assessment, and not some unknown person/service from the Internet.

In short: it's a disclaimer so that you won't be blaming the person who gave you an advice for your losses.

I am starting my DYOR with checking if the token has community and are they real people, moonbois or bots.

Then i move to tokenomics:
What the marketcap is?
Does it have any liquidity?
How many wallets are there? Are they active?
Is the price sustainable to token issuance rate?
Is there any audit for the contract?

Then i move to team,
Who they are and are they real?
How much tokens they got? Do they get their tokens gradually over time?
Does everyone in the team have reason for their place in the team?
Is the team talking about the price of the token? (bad sign).
And finally leader of the project should be the main coder as well.

Then i investigate if the token or coin is even needed.
Then i move to check out competition.

And finally find out possible legal issues they would be facing in the future.

But i can just throw all that to garbage and totally ape in if i find a new microcap coin that i have good vibes about.

- What does it  mean it actually mean to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?

Part of the answer to this is what you're just doing by making consultation on areas you're not sure about in establishing a fact, this is what should preceed learning but many people don't do that, you need to personally understand something, view the direct perspective from your own approach and understand better, so that you won't fall into wrong hands or get misinformed about a particular thing, which is what you're just doing by taking your own research on the need for why DYOR.

- What are the steps to start to take? Technical analysis? Fundamental analysis? Sentimental analysis?

You can combime them all depending on the aspects needed, but when it comes to taking a research, you're expected to go extensively and only majors on the aspects you can cope and adapt with.

- How did you or do you DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ?

I do consult for different sources to knowledge from various platforms both online and in person, i start with creating an idea or area in need, i figure out the problem or challenges, i consult for help, and relate data collected or information from different sources, i analyse them into categories and sort out, i take note and practice the best way i could understand better the way forward, and i begin by taking a step.

What does it "actually" mean? Well it is pretty much self-explanatory just like on how you conduct your own feasibility study. Doing technical analysis is more of in a trading side actually rather than helping you in deciding whether it is a worth of a coin to be bought (I had used TAs back when I was day trading).

How did I DYOR? Multiple sources and making sure that the sources are also credible so it is not that just simple research and draw conclusion. I had seen plenty of ICO review sites that are just straight up paid reviews. You just pay some advisor to bring good reviews to your ICO project and slap it with "KYC passed" just to ensure your team looks legitimate.

It is not that complicated to do your own research. The internet is full of information and you can find all kinds of information on the internet. All you need is to make use of the resources you have around you to educate yourself about something.

A lot of google searches and reading is the best way to do that and watching informative videos it helps a lot.

do your own research is an invitation that is always campaigned by many seniors to people who want to start investing, the term before you buy bitcoin, you must first understand what bitcoin is, the team behind it, its price history, and whether there are politics that influence.  i always do my own research on whatever I want to do, especially in investing, like recently i bought a crypto asset, and i did research on it through several site references that i can see, i also don't forget to find out about the potential of the asset that's in the long run (this is very important so as not to get trap in prices).

Read as much as you can from multiple sources (including questions on the forum), get to understand which information is reliable, synthetize all of this into the answers you need.

Depending for what.
Is this for trading? Then understand that TA alone is never enough, get prepared for big sudden changes in any direction.
Is this for investing? Then learn to look at the big picture and to ignore the noise. Also learn about patience and trust. And clearly, understand what Bitcoin is about.
Is this for something else? Since Bitcoin is not only about trading, investing, spending...

- How did you or do you DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ?

Many hours on the forum. Plus a lot of googling, reading around and YouTube too.

Some of us started to invest in bitcoins even without doing our own research, we just followed what we were told by our friends. We didn't do our research with bitcoins before we started, It was a reckless action that we did not regret. But same mistakes should not be made with altcoins that can be very unreliable as that can put you in regrets.

- What does it  mean it actually mean to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?
It means that after hearing, you should do your part to verify what you have heard for yourself and not just trust the opinions of others even if they may look to know more than you do, always verify.

... do you DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ?
I do not invest much in altcoins, but if I hear about an altcoin or see any news about a major development generally in cryptocurrency, I always try to find out the facts and verify the information for myself. That is doing my own research.

- How did you or do you DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ?
All your actions in crypto trading are your own responsibility. because you have complete control over yourself. then this is where we need DYOR. namely conducting independent analysis both in terms of technical, fundamental or sentimental. and you have to have more faith in what you find from the results of your analysis. Suggestions from other people are needed, but we only make it limited to additional information. because still we have to research further what other people suggest to us before we finally decide to take the suggestion or reject it. This is DYOR. you analyze and you take action on the basis of the results of your own analysis then you alone will be fully responsible for all the actions you take.

For me dyor, will also lead you to post, or research of someone, since you will come accross of vlogs of an influencers, and articles, for me Dyor is that, instead of asking your friends or someone in the forum, like spoon feed to you, you have to work to find those information in the internet since, its already there you just have to apply it, and learn from it, since sometimes it works and sometimes it will not, i did a lot of research before, but as i go along the way its still a trial and error,

- What does it  mean it actually mean to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?
Literally to take your time and make your initiative to know and research something about the projects you're about to invest.

- What are the steps to start to take? Technical analysis? Fundamental analysis? Sentimental analysis?
That's already about trading, you can start with the basics by just knowing who are the teams behind, reading the whole or bit of a project's whitepaper. Something like that but if you want to proceed and want to get into trading then those types of analysis are what you need.

- How did you or do you DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ?
Reading through the forum, we've got specific sections in here so it's easier to research. If can't be found, simply using the search engines.

Lightning network is good with small amount of BTC
Assuming you want to buy a coin or token, you can not just buy it, you can check when the coin has been existing and how volatile the coin is. You can check the coin marketcap, supply and also know more about the coin.

Another is a new project, you can not just invest, you have to know the plan of the developers, check their white paper to be unique and convincing, looking for plagiarism to know if it is fakenor not.

Some people can not go for a coin that has not been existing for a long time, because new coins can become shit coins and new project can be fake. That is another research.
