Much of the appeal of Bitcoin (to the people who actually buy and sell things over the internet) involves relative anonymity.  They don't want to use credit cards that directly link them to a specific transaction.

The purchase of various substances.
Participating in various activities.

Online dating could reasonably fit that model for many people.

I think that would depend on the type of online dating. For just one time things sure, but if you want to make it something committed then maybe not...

We were accepting BTC from verified members in a dating community I have been admin in. While I have been there, only some members were using this form of payment in spite of the fact we had some BTC exclusive gifts on the site. These members were often geeks who used BTC anyway but people who had not been into BTC before did not go into understanding BTC just because of these gifts. In my opinion, BTC is ONE possibility in payment that more dating sites should accept BUT the communities of these sites would not likely use BTC if they never used before and most people at these sites never used BTC before.

Interesting insight! Is this a big dating site, or something regional? I think it necessarily doesn't need to bring in more customers or people into BTC (even if we liked that), it would be a great thing to offer people a new way to pay for services, though - which is good for the customers.

Online dating could reasonably fit that model for many people.  Some fraction of 40 million people could be a boost for Bitcoin liquidity and market penetration (if you will pardon the expression).

^That article is spot on. I don't know why so many bitcoiners can't understand the simple facts in that article.

Quote
"If some of those applications require bitcoin, I am sure that we will end up using bitcoin. But we are not going to use bitcoin for the sake of doing so," he said

This is true not only in finance, but everywhere. People aren't going to use bitcoin just because it's there. They're not going to use bitcoin because a website accepts it, or because a bitcoin wallet came pre-installed on their phones. People are not going to use bitcoin until there is a real benefit to them, and decentralization is NOT one of them. If people really cared that much about decentralization, bitcoin would be mainstream already, but the fact is, no one cares.

So no, having dating sites, or ANY site accepting bitcoin won't do much to increase its popularity.

That said, having a place to spend your bitcoins once there is a benefit for using bitcoin is also essential.

Would it not be better for amazon to adopt bitcoin? 1 out of the thousands of dating sites wont bring in many new bitcoiners. Everyone uses amazon not all 40 million daters use the same site

I honeslty dont see that helping too much, dating sites dont have the influx of transactions that would make bitcoin useful.

The last thing we want is more scammers using Bitcoin, I know women must get men all over them on those sites but for men it's even more of a minefield than trying to pick up girls RL.

Maybe the sites that verify those people can accept their payments in bitcoins. I am sure a lot of people who actually use these date sites don't want it in their statements that where this money was spent. Bitcoin would be a nice alternative to that.

Wait what? OKCupid and Badoo are already accepting Bitcoin  (I think it's only available in a few countries on Badoo) .
Yeah Badoo is certainly accepting BTC. I think it's great because it gives you an extra of privacy, since you can avoid the SMS stuff. I would like to see Tinder too.

It may be true that 40 million of people in the US are using dating service but how many of these people are using bitcoin? Bitcoin payment will be just small curiosity for people who pays for dating services with credit card and paypal. And won't change much. The same way how Bitcoin payment did not change much for Humble Bundle.

I always thought dating sites were free and get the money for ads. Am I wrong? Is there any premium membership or do you need "tokens" to match you up wirh somebody?
I think generally, every platform that takes money should have bitcoin ad payment method implemented.

if fiat is still between the available payment options, it won't change much, bitcoin will end up be used only by few random people(couple in this case), what those online shops really need to do, is accepting bitcoin only,

now these dating site are good because they could potentially increase the number of women using bitcoin
