I agree that their information policy leaves much to be desired, but not that it's particularly risky to have money with them. To my knowledge it is the oldest still existing Bitcoin exchange. You should never keep money on an exchange if it is at all avoidable, though.

If it's not working from your IP, just use VPN and select other IPs until you find one that works. I guess that they've banned more IPs than they wanted against the DOS.

But have no second thought about this: the exchange is absolute trash, and we take a huge risk whenever we have money there. They haven't updated their news section since 2015, they don't explain why they're offline, etc.

I'm monitoring the site 24h/day and it's been working for 20+ hours, although at times it's still timing out.
Virwox has their server hosted on a server that has "DDOS protection" which basically means they get attacked like any other site, but they will block certain IPs. Those blocks usually last about 6 to 8 hours, after which they are lifted.

Current access time averages out to about 5~10 seconds, which means the DDOS is probably still going on, but less than before.

Is it working for all of you?

when im trying to go on the site it just loads for a long time and then fails says refused to connect
Its working fine for some time now I think your IP is blocked just because of extra protection against DDoS attack if you still have problem then try to send email to support hope they will sort out this problem with you

They are up again and there's no even announcement on their front page about the DDOS attack. I've pulled out some of my funds there before looks like they are no longer safe. For all of you folks, if you have some funds on them better try to change your passwords and email addresses. It's better to safe or be sorry after the DDOS.

They should make an official announcement through all social media mediums, including this forum, explaining what's happening.
They don't want to give their customers fear that some attackers are able to breach their security. Not even in their news section, they don't want others to discover it.

Check your IP address. I suggest it might be blocked. Have been using virwox since last week.

The site has been up pretty much continuously for the last 12 hours. If you still can't access it then maybe your IP is being blocked by the DDOS protection system.

Their twitter is silent: https://twitter.com/virwox?lang=en
That's bullshit.

I'm waiting 10 more hours. If no fix or no announcement comes, I'm reversing all the PayPal payments done to them and reporting them to law enforcement. Let's not wait too much until we take action!

Have not been able to login for any of this week.

It's a very small exchange and like ckev26 says there's usually only about 300 online. Most I've seen is about 900. I'm new to crypto and have been using them as they take paypal (in a convoluted way as you have to trade USD/EUR for SLL and then BTC and vice versa). Usually only about 25BTC,  up for sale, and about 30K each of USD and EUR. Last week before the gold fork there were only 10 or so BTC for trade. This was same for previous fork, and BTC volume returned to about 22-25.

However, a few days before gold fork, there was an unusual BTC sell order. I'm guessing at market, of about 70-120 BTC. I managed to get about 1 BTC for between 2250-3700 USD Cheesy There was also a large (for this exchange) buy order at around USD 2200 of 87 BTC, but that never got touched.  Thought BTC had tanked when I got the emails through!!! but it continued trading about 5700USD at the time. Anyway, this sell was unusual, as there was no corresponding selling of the SLL's to USD or EUR for the seller to cash out to fiat. The seller of those coins could have made about USD 170K more by placing a limit order at market price. Would take a few weeks to fill from previous sells of 100+ BTC. Maybe the seller is upset about what they did, who knows.

Like ckev26 says, the site owners are losing money from commissions. Around USD10K per day is my guess.

Hope to see virwox back up again soon. I like the site as it's the only one to let me use paypal. Cheesy

As of 31st October they are 943,976 registered users but users logged in using it is normally between 100-300 every time i have been logged in, here is a cached page from just before it went down..
https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Z_qtJFr9OB0J:https://www.virwox.com/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

i have tried several times to login today, first time i got "403 forbidden" second time  i got "an error has occurred please try later" and just now i just get a blank page
yesterday i tried ping request which timed out
its doubt it will be an exit scam, there commission over 24 hours for converting SLL alone is £13,922.89 (@3.9%)  sounds more like a ddos attack, strange how support has not sent all users with an email explaining

The VirWox site seems to be operational again, since about 6AM UTC today (november 2nd, 2017) - but i'm still seeing request times that vary between 0.5s and 10s. It will take a while for it to stabilize again.

It started experiencing problems around 1PM UTC on oct. 31st and 8 hours later almost completely blacked out for a duration of another 32 hours.

[edit]... and it's offline again!

Does anyone have a channel that has active content about Virwox?  Their twitter account has been inactive for the past 5 years give or take, and those that have tried know that emails most of the time are replied to, but usually not very fast and with little information. I've searched for some channel about Virwox for the past 5 years, but all i found so far is just a couple forum posts here and there..

Since i know there's a lot of people using their service to buy & sell Bitcoins for USD and EUR, there should be a fixed place for conversation and information about their service. I'm willing to set up a website for that, if there isn't already. Replies to this thread are highly appreciated, so i know what steps to take.

have you emailed the support ?
I've mailed them. Got a one-liner as a return:

We currently experiencing a DDOS attack. Please try again later.
That was yesterday, after about 12 hours of being offline.

It is also good to notice that sometimes i can get through to the site... about once an hour or so, for few seconds only, before it becomes unresponsive again. Also PINGs won't work much either (they usually do work, even if their server has its famous Bad gate "nginx" apology). Seems likely they are indeed under attack. This has happened before, few months ago.
