i think the best term you should used is Hacker because scammer is very different from the hacker , scammer is defined someone who is asking for money while the hacker defined as someone who will gain your data without your authority .
The best things to do in other to avoid been scammed is to make sure that you keep all your coins and tokens in safe wallet and only transfer your assets to the exchange when you are ready to trade don't keep your assets on exchange. And for more security always use 2fa.
Keep coins in offline wallet and make a research to prevent future attacks
