Store it in a machine that will not be used in the internet or use the good 'ol paper wallet. These types of cold storage ensure that the integrity of the wallet data is preserved without being compromised. If you ever need to get the balance out of it, just sweep it and it's done. It's not as complicated as it was before, or not that hard given that we all know how to do it and a quick search on the internet provides a multitude of results instructing users how to do such. Even an old smartphone which can download a mobile wallet can serve as a cold storage and I'm using one right now.

There have lots of way to store bitcoin or  alt coin so make your own decesion. If you want to store bitcoin  I can suggest  to use  bitcoin desktop wallet and safe from virus or maluware. On the other hand if you want to hold alt coin use metamask or myetherwallet  and myether wallet  is the best wallet for holding but offline wallet or paper wallet is the best for do this.If you are newbie use coinbase for bitcoin and myetherwallet for altcoin.

One word. Paper wallet.
You can create address/vanity address/segwit address, doesnt matter really, but sometimes you get with it nice looking paper wallet. Just print it and you have "offline" storage for your coins.
Of course you can create your own paper wallet design in 100% offline enviroment, its just a little bit harder and limited to your graphic skills.

As said, use a paper wallet or a hard wallet.
Ledger Nano S for example.
However don't forgot your passwords and don't store them digitally non encrypted

Consider buying a Ledger Nano if you plan on not touching your coins for a really long time. It's a hardware wallet btw. Make sure you store it somewhere safe and always keep another backup. DON'T even consider storing your coins in one exchange.
Also, consider installing a portfolio tracker like blockfolio to monitor the prices of the coins you have.

Paper wallets or hardware wallets are the best solution, if you want both secure withdraw from your wallet and holding buy hardware wallet but if you will hold it for years and withdraw once in the future, just keep them in paper wallet.

By keeping your bitcoins or alternative currencies in a safe wallet that you have access to the private keys is reasonable than storing it on an exchange. The use of hardware /cold wallet is the best option.

In a paper wallet. Just generate a private-key/wallet seed for every one of your coins and write/print them down.

Alternatively, you could use a hardware wallet. But the device could stop working, so having the backup seed would be the main priority (back again to the paper wallet).
