Ethereum is still the hottest coin as it is most profitable to mine and the market cap is quite big, it is around $800 million.

HODLing is an art, not just a word...
ethereum is the hottest coin right now since at everywhere I saw people start discussing it. But soon or later another altcoin will replace it. Litecoin maybe will be the next hottest altcoin.

I think Ethereum is the hottest coin for last month, now people are looking for another coin to trade, but fro me Ethereum will be hot again if there   the big developer keep their promised to support Ethereum

ethereum has been hot for a longer time than that. it has started being hot back when it was planning to get pumped by the big bag holders who have been accumulating it at low prices and the hype is still alive to this day while they are dumping their coins

I would pick Gridcoin (GRC), as it is one of the more interesting coins out there. It's idea is brilliant but also easy to understand for people not in crypto before, see for example this thread that was on the frontpage of reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/4b4drk/a_currency_minted_by_doing_science/t1_d16hch5

Gridcoin (GRC) replaces mining with doing research for scientific projects, for example to cure Ebola (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/oet1/overview.do), fold proteins (https://boinc.bakerlab.org/) or find aliens (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/).

From a user's point of view, he simply has to run simulations from the different projects using the BOINC software (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/). Then the network comes to a consensus, who has contributed how much computing power to BOINC, which can bee seen for example here (http://www.gridresearchcorp.com/gridcoin/?result&t=CPID_Leaderboard). This process is decentralized among all nodes, there is no central server issuing all coins like it is for example the case with Curecoin. In some blocks this consenus is saved in the blockchain and the reward one gets when staking a block is proportional to how much research was recently done for BOINC by this researcher.

Setting it all up has been quite complicated in the past, but the pool on pool.gridcoin.co has made alle this easier and already has more than 800 active miners/researchers (http://pool.gridcoin.co/rankings)

I also has very active development, here is the main forum: https://cryptocointalk.com/forum/464-gridcoin-grc/
More information and tutorial to set it up here: www.gridcoin.us

At that time I cannot say anything about that which alt coin is the hottest right now, as the time for bitcoin block halving is near and everyone is busy with bitcoin, so the time for alt coin will come only after people get some time from bitcoin, I think a few months later.
I am excited to see the influence the bitcoin halving will have.

the hottest coin changes each day, so it is sometimes a new coin today and another the next.
so far ETH has been so hot but the heat at this point is more of a risk than heat. also Ripple has been going up and down recently, and soon LISK will be the hottest as soon as it is released.

It is the ethereum, but the price is dropping fast. I hope the price will recover one day. It is a good coin.
Ahhh, hopefully you had some and held onto it.  I don't know what the price was when you wrote the above but damn.  Sometimes buy and hold is a f-ing good strategy.  And ETH is still a hot coin, though it's cooled down some.

I guess it is not altcoin being hot, I might prefer ETH because ETH has a high enough price, so if the price drops, it could be a good opportunity

Is alt mania still a thing? It's been two years since the mania was at its peak and nothing's shaped up to break out of the confines of this forum with the possible exception of Ethereum. If an alt emerges that truly kicks butt I think it'll come from a place far away from here.

Obviously, it's not the common wisdom of Altcoin discussion here on BCT. Troll wars among people not willing to admit the general fail of altcoins as an incubator for the next Bitcoin. Shall we wait a couple more years?

no, you should engage and fix, what you think its wrong, you are welcome,
we  need people with a critical, constructive voice, if you manage to ignore the trolls, you will see clearly the real efforts.

... and visit my thread, there is no trolling at all
only supportive community members and i love each of them
have fun

The hottest altcoin in term of hashing power is Ethereum. It has 500GH/s hashing power, equivalent to 25,000 AMD 280X. That is more than any other coins.

Much more than litecoin for sure. Unless we're agreeing that Litecoin is not an alt.
