Well there is no need for a motivation to invest in an ICO because what we need to do before investing in an ICO is to study the project concept and the team experience to implement that project with a greater percentage of chance of having a success rate. Aside from that as we all know that there are many fraud ICO projects nowadays and it is difficult to trust all your money for it. I suggest to invest more on those coins that are listed already is established also through its rank on coinmarketcap.com top crypto.
First of all, we hope that the ICO we invested for can lead us to success. All investor wants that outcome anyway. Why do we still invest on ICO even almost all of it are scam and also even if its not, still the profit is not sure? Its because the need of money motivates us and i think this suits your question.
From the perspective of investors, we buy coins during ICO for profit. Now it is easy to lose investments because of scammers or because of a bear market or other reasons that reduce the price.
Nothing motivates me to invest into ICO's I just do it because the project is worth my attention and I can spare some cash to invest if they have a working product already. Most of the comments here are related to profit but most of you think that if you invest into ICO's you will automatically become rich ...this is not how cryptocurrencies work.

anyway, ICOs are very risky investment
I consider it as a high-low game, and that kind of games are very addicted. so I often use a very small amount of money to invest in some ICO., wait for it to x10 or x100 and then sell it.
but sadly most of them were zero out ^^
Basically it sounds different to the investors because all are want money and they got motivated when they can see that this projects have good profit based on their campaign also ICO attract their customers and investors invest here for projects. So ICO projects mainly depend on campaign through media or social apps.

Most ICOs like this were profitable. Sometimes the ETH network went to a halt because there was so much buying.
These days this never happens and these ICOs rarely list on an exchange at an opening price of 500-1000%.

one of my motivations to invest in ico is because of so many legit ico that can be obtained if we join into it. that way we will get a lot of profit. to investing in ico we have to choose a good ico and have a good prospect in the future. we can see the roadmap to know what the ico plan in the future.
personally, I think, Looking for a good ICO project is my main reason to pursue this work because if the ICO project will create something big interesting and useful for the community I am pretty sure that will make bigger results and then the bonus will be the most attention important thing that we see. because by simply selling the bonus, then we can restore our initial capital.
