What do you want to do? Short-term trading or for long-term investment? My advice, if for a long-term investment, you can choose altcoin whose credibility is already clear in CoinmarketCap, seems to reduce the risk of loss. but before, you also have to research Altcoin that you want to buy first. That was normal for altcoin because investor do invest for the project and they do altcoins to have an investor for their ICO. You must be wise from buying altcoin and need time for update because you need to be aware that every altcoin has a big potential from losing its ICO price in just a minute.

of course during bitcoin down all altcoin will be down too, some altcoin is bad in utility then the price get down too, the altcoin created just for scaming people by ICO, IEO system.but not all altcoin bad in utility, some of them have a great utility but the condition make the price get down.

i can't say name of altcoin, because each altcoin have a "unique way" to survive or dead, example Dogecoin, fogecoin created just for fun but still running right now.if the developer still doing something, or give maintenance and solving the bug of coin, i think this coin will be survive and the reserve of it, if developer leave the project, the coin will be dead.

At present most of the altcoins cannot survive in the crypto market and become shitcoin because they cannot develop and do not have trading volume. coins that have no trading volume will eventually die. so I always recommend investing in the top 20 CMC coins. because the coins already have a large trading volume and market capitalization. and also already has a community so that coins are not likely to die like ethereum, ripple, litecoin and binance coin. all of it is a potential coin.

If you are talking about altcoins that has future, i wont hesitate in telling you that ETHEREUM, NEO, XRP, XLM, BNB, MONERO AND NEO are some of the altcoins that have a bright future
As speaking of their functionality - yes, it is needed, their potential is incredible.
Still, it is rather clear that as time goes by and global regulation standards will be introduced - privacy coins would be forced to move to the shadow. Already in Japan, no exchange can get a license if it has any privacy coin listed. Even in the UK, some exchanges are already delisting them or are forced to apply a much wider scope of verification of people buying them.
most of course altcoin which does not focus on development, especially for altcoin which is not derived from crowdfunding like ico and such is very prone to die especially if the dev is not serious, and the rest of course crowdfunding projects (ico, ieo, etc.) also have the potential especially for projects that force turning funds from softcap opinions and it turns out their plans are a little hampered due to lack of funds and there are other things too but mostly about exchange.

The market is not very supportive of most altcoins right now. I think you won't get wrong investing altcoins in the top 20 ranked in coinmarketcap. Maybe even as much as the top 50. I mean these are coins that have already proven market presence and community that will carry the coin in the ups and downs of the crypto market.
Altcoins that brings something entirely new, unlike something we've seen already on other altcoins, many new altcoins still lacks in this area but its not impossible, rare real use case is the answer and most new coins don't have this
New ideas are always welcome in the cryptocurrency market. But at the same time, many of the existing cryptocurrencies can be replaced with technologically superior alternatives. There are many domains, for which suitable coins are not available. For example, TRX was designed for sharing of digital content, but it is not being used for this purpose. So if a new cryptocurrency comes in to existence and proves that it is a better alternative, then it may be possible for it to replace TRX.
Personally, I believe that at the moment it is difficult to say which altcoins will die or will please us with their successes. I believe that for each altcoin you need to make your own forecast and then the caritin will be a little clear. Now, a completely unclear situation is happening on the cryptocurrency market, and those altcoins that were on the verge of extinction are beginning to gradually develop. So you have to follow almost all altcoins to know where and when to invest.

VET, XRP, ADA, LINK, TRON and APL (Apollo currrency)
Thats the ones i will put my hard earned cash into... Who knows maybe i can retire earlier than with age 67 ;-)

Out of those I like VET, ADA, and LINK. I guess XRP will always be interesting and I don't see it going away.

I think the first is that the developers are active, there is no iCO, there are innovative, so it is safer. Airdrop projects are also worth paying attention to, such as onion, sem.
I think the cryptos that will have a future are the ones in the top 50 in the crypto Market Cap and probably some of the cheap altcoins that really got an interesting project and strong coins. Personally, I just invested in some altcoins which are in the top 100 and I didn't get really an interesting profit the last year, so I'm hoping that this year, I'll get some profit from them.
This year is a very good year for you to choose to invest because surely the altcoin season can come back again and your chances of making a profit will be much higher than last year. I think investing in top 100 coins is a very safe option for investors but should only spend 30% of assets because altcoin still has a lot of great risks that you need to avoid.Of course, holding Bitcoin should be a top priority because this coin can determine the upcoming trend of the crypto market and certainly you will not have to wait too long to make a profit.

My vote would be for coins like Tao or ODBcoin.
Those would be coins which with real-world use cases/businesses built on them, OR which are official coins (either full blockchains or tokens) linked to a celebrity, a country, or some other kind of brand with a following and loyal fans.
I think Tao is an example of this because there are currently at least three incorporated businesses founded around using Tao - a record label, an exchange, and something called Fanmix. Fanmix is a service similar to the recently closed Pledgemusic or also similar to Patreon.
Bands raise funds by pre-selling albums, plus merchandise, and if they raise over $10K then they are issued their own branded cryptocurrency and all fans who pledged money to them get their share of the coins.
Those coins can then be traded on the exchange https://alt.market but *only* with Tao as the base for the pair. So you can exclusively sell artist coins for Tao, or use Tao to buy the artist tokens. There's also an affiliate program which pays out Tao for every dollar spent by anyone you send to Fanmix.
They did a trial run late last year with ODBcoin which is an officially licensed Wu-Tang Clan Ol Dirty Bastard cryptocurrency. Fanmix just opened recently launched their first band on the platform a couple of days ago:

I'm still going to have to go with this answer.
Personally, I believe that at the moment, cryptocurrency is not very stable. Since in the crypto market the price of altcoins is practically in place. And in this it is very difficult to predict the further development of the crypt. From this situation on the market, I believe that the most promising coins in the future will be Ethereum and Bitcoin. So let's hope that these coins will bring us good profit.

Any.altcoins that actually have real world case use. Many altcoins have been into the market and very few of these coins or tokens have no real world case used, becarefull of these coins with these tokens. Am not a fans of altcoins withouts real world use, many of them are scam project. Ethereum still be my favourite.
Ethereum is the platform for new apps, same as NEO, stellar, tron, and from recently bnb is a platform too. What usage case are you talking about, with many alts you can trade and gamble, that some usage case, don't you agree?!
I`m looking for active teams and community members behind some alt. If alt have dedicated team behind, with active supporters, that project will be successful in the future, cause active supporters are spreading the word better then any other type of advertising. Each of us have something that look for in alt, for you maybe some alt have no usage case while someone else is making a huge profit on the same alt? Do you get what I`m talking about?
We all bet on alts we like, there's no other way to say it then betting, and we hope that alts we chose will be successful in the future.
