You might try checking out job opportunities in the fields you're interested in. After getting a few leads, perhaps invade a few forums that are inhabited by expatriates to find out if they're happy, if their salaries are reasonable, etc.

This is a very interesting look to the topic of languages from the economic side. I speak several languages myself and I have also wondered about the economic approach. For sure Chinese and Japanese is a very interesting way, but for me it's too big challenge. I think Scandinavian languages are much more achievable and with a large perspective for the future.
I think Mandarin is the way to go. I mean with almost every country vying for the affection of China and its man power and its influence on the economy then speaking the language is a huge advantage on this point. I've seen it first hand how the rights words on the right ears opens doors and create opportunities.
