It's become so big because it's had constant media exposure which has improved the price ten fold.
Bitcoin is bitcoin today simply because it is the first. The first one to offer the people the capacity to do what they wanted with their own money without the fear of government peeking at their transactions. Bitcoin may have indeed been use in illegal activities but we cant deny the fact that it is one of the factors that pushes bitcoin to what we know it today.
Because of it's abilities. The ability to transfer money without anyone knowing who you are, Security and it's overwhelming support from around the world. and lastly, it has one of the best team which is really dedicated to thier goal. There might be alot of coins spread in the internet but they are just copycat and a portion of what Bitcoin can do so most of them fail and probably all of them will never beat Bitcoin and just stays as an Altcoin.
Because i think its uniqueness! has its own characteristic acceptable at the expense of individuality and sincerity. no single institution controls it so u have financial freedom, Compared to traditional Bank account Bitcoin account can be set up easier.
What made Bitcoin so successful? How couldn't altcoins like defeat it at the early stages? Is it because of the overwhelming support of the community that made bitcoin what it is today?
Maybe what Bitcoin make it successful is that people now understand the digital currencies or crypto currency then are now understand the internet that make it possible that they trust Bitcoin unlike in the past years internet was just starting to understand by others. Also maybe some are trying somethings to make their investment grow. Also some famous person helps the Bitcoin community/industry to become trusted by other people.

Bitcoin is the mother of all crypto currencies and BlockChain technology started its journey with bitcoin only. So that pioneer status has made bitcoin immensely popular and enjoying the public trust since its inception. Bitcoin has made the blockchain popular and with it comes all the altcoins what we have today.
Also the idea of decentralization came in to picture with bitcoin which got back-up from the communities around the world. Overall i believe bitcoin became popular because it was the pioneer in crypto coin. Otherwise, we have a lot of coins available in the market today which is technologically superior than bitcoin.
the idea of "decentralization" was already around. specially in other fields. for example the file sharing (torrents) is a very good example of it where the term "peer" gained a new meaning. and bitcoin is similar with everything being peer to peer when they build on top of the longest chain that everyone shares.
the idea of decentralizing money became famous with bitcoin though.

Considering its the first digital currency or cryptocurrency exist wayback before into those years. It might not get the attention directly from most people but there are some who do believe on its potential and Satoshi did really make a great innovation when it comes into payment system which we do see on its white paper on whats the purpose of the creation of bitcoin and now we are witnessing its success.
People who use bitcoin has made it what it has become. Without its users bitcoin wouldn't be worth anything. It has passed a long way from the begininig up to know and with time it has begun more firm, resilient, accepted, even regulated. This wasn't easy way but I beleive that now on it will go much smoother.

The thing what brought bitcoin till here,is that bitcoin is the very first crypto currency and people were like yeah we can go for it as the price wasn't much in the beginning, agreed it had some technical issues but that was also solved and the features of bitcoin was quite appealing to people, so they thought even if it's a fail, what loss will we get and they had very less to lose and the more people joined and this forum also contributed a lot for bitcoin's success. And now here we are with bitcoin 's price revolving around 4000$-5000$. 
One of the advantages that Bitcoin had and why has made the success is because it was first and the concept was well designed. I also think that it has appeared on the market in the right time and timing is also important because we all know how many good ideas and projects failed because they appeared too soon or too late.
I think that Bitcoin is still unique and the first, all other altcoins are just trying to copy it.

We know that japan is technologized country thats why japanese have the power to improve what they have and the founder (Satoshi Nakamoto) was from Japan so bitcoin can be famous or too much uses because it is the one that they know than other coin.
