You should consider looking into the team. If the ico has a great composition of team, surely the hype of the ico is massive. Also you look for their mvp or their working product, these can also attract many investors. And the ico dont exist when there is no community around. Make sure to look at their community. The more members of the community, the more hype is its ico.
The most important thing behind the value of any altcoin is the project, the team working behind it and sustainability of project. If project sustainble in future then it automatically create value and demand.
I believe that the real value of the altcoin is the project itself. It's usage inside the project. Most Alts are utility token. That the token is being use as utility in order to utilize a certain product, services or platform. Good luck to all the legitimate ICO's out there. I'm praying more success to your project.
There are a lot of things that can make an altcoin valuable. Many of the times, it's from promises. The team promises to deliver a product or platform and if they don't deliver, it can affect the price negatively.

Of course the functionality of the coin is the main factor of the success. If coin give some benefits to its holders this coin wooll worth more because there is more value into it.

I think the 3 most important factors that would make alt coins or even bitcoins valuable are the following:
1. Function - no good alt coin comes out without a very ambitious function. Some are just plain trash and some are really helpful
2. Complexity - some alt coins have special functions that require complex coding. Inspite the complexity of these coins, it is still very marketable and understandable by consumers.
3. Ease of use - nowadays, we don't read the instructions. So with that being in the situation, people tend to just plug-and-play a lot of things. Same goes for alt coins. No instructions needed = profit.
Now altcoins are just for speculation. Look for coins that each of us will need, which will be useful or perform some necessary functions.
I think developers should have it really innovative and has physical application like it should be really new and really beneficial for everyone and then everything will follow. If the project really is worth funding for then investors will come and if investors and developers succeed in maintaining the project then the market will go active with their altcoin.

I think what makes altcoin valuable is when altcoin prices are in decline and so now you can invest in altcoin and make a profit because as I know today many people hold altcoins and wait for altcoin prices back because altcoin is also important to them
For a coin to gain value, it needs to solve an existing problem. Most want to, at some point, use it as money, and maybe extend the ability to build smart contracts on top of this. Money needs to server three purposes.

for me an altcoin to be more valuable, it should be in atleast 20 exchanges, and to be listed on exchanges there are lots of factors like the community acceptance, trading volume on other exchanges, teams reputation and network. marketing and advertising is the key to promote a certain coin and the activities to be made is not only 3 but a lot of things to do.

The concept of the project will be very important as well as the value it will add to the market. it has to come in with a solution to a problem for it to succeed. the development team is also very important. an experienced team is more likely to come up with a good coin.

But if bitcoin continues to rise then relatively speaking all alts are equally goes up. it's like a demand and supply many bought when dip and sold it on bull so it's all valuable whether it's a deadcoin or live working products.
