Bitcoin is the “original” cryptocurrency. They are virtual money or electronic form of currency. It is convenient since it is virtual so you won’t need to store it in banks. It holds intrinsic value as of gold. Meanwhile, altcoins are the improved version of bitcoins. It has speed in transactions and better distribution methods.

can, everything can happen in the future. there is no definite measure of when it will happen
for now, bitcoin is too strong to be defeated by altcoin. bitcoin is the most famous crypto and has a selling value is quite expensive. almost all traders and investors have bitcoins

Bitcoin has important implications for the development of cryptocurrency. That is a huge difference. it is a process. Altcoin inherits and improves the features of bitcoin to create services, quality and usability and bring it into practice. ETH, LTC are very good progress. It is impossible to know if the altcoin ratio can succeed in the future. We can accept and appreciate the positive on cryptocurrency.

1. Can we expect altcoins to reach the success of Bitcoin?
2. and how long would it take?
3. what are success metrics?
4. What makes Bitcoin different from alt coins?

This is better than yours (the way you written the questions).

1. Unknown (maybe yes, maybe no) but I prefer altcoins will never reach or equal with bitcoin in term of; price and trust from people.
2. Unknown (we don't know what will happen in the future) if refers to my first point, it will take forever.
3. Adoption, acceptance, spread widely in worldwide (bitcoin and ethereum has these points)
4. The most significant thing is; bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency and altcoins just other copied, following bitcoin path.
There are a lot of altcoins which is better than bitcoin such as lower fees or faster confirmation time, etc. But, altcoins still can't reach bitcoin due to that (4th) reason.

I think that main key of success it that bitcoin is the first, and it is more "posh" to have bitcoin than other coins, so big investors make there investments in it.

Differences Bitcoin and Altcoin - Virtual currencies of various kinds for example are Litecoin, Dogecoin and there is also Altcoin. The currently popular is Bitcoin, though there's nothing wrong if you understand the difference between each of those virtual currencies. every virtual currency has its own advantages and disadvantages, for example Altcoin and Bitcoin. If traced further a lot of types of cryptocurrency that exist in the community but who is rising then Bitcoin. altcoin itself is a newcomer that has not been widely known by the public so that the description of Altcoin is still gray or unclear. In order for you to be more familiar with Altcoin, consider the difference Bitcoin and Altcoin following

You cannot expect altcoins in general to have the same success of bitcoin, only some altcoins are going to have anything similar, most other altcoins are not going to survive for long, besides the current success of bitcoin is still small compared to its potential, if bitcoin is adopted by a huge amount of people then we could say that almost no altcoin is ever going to reach that level of success.

As long as bitcoin becomes the benchmark for determining the price and the movement of an altcoin there probably will not be any altcoin that can beat bitcoin success. But, to become the toughest competitor of bitcoin may be a very open opportunity because even in the competitive economy it is indispensable to make comparisons and get the shortcomings of each and be evaluated by developers to make the coin better.

I think the bitcoin has the highest market volume than all the altcoins plus it has been around  for the longest time and withstood the test of time which means a lot of people are going to feel at ease investing in bitcoin than any other altcoin because its the least likely to fail cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin will forever be known as the first crypto currency.  It’s place in history is already well defined.  As such, I believe it will always be a valuable commodity.  As long as the people believe in it, it will be a great place to store value.

Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency. For example, hoover brand name became synonymous with vacuum cleaners, and Bitcoin became synonymous for digital currencies.
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency in the world.
IOTA is the first cryptocurrency not based on a blockchain.
Even if any new altcoin becomes more popular than Bitcoin, Bitcoin would remain famous as the first invented cryptocurrency in the world.

Bitcoin has a large lead as a store of value over every altcoin in having existed 8 years without failure. The security of Bitcoin has been proven far more than its much younger counterparts with usage by almost every metric exceeding that of altcoins.  Cool
Further, Bitcoin is more accessible, with more exchanges, more merchants, more software and more hardware that support it. Bitcoin is far more liquid, with much larger volumes than every altcoin. Bitcoin has the largest developer ecosystem with more software and more implementations than any altcoin. Bitcoin has the most entrepreneurs creating companies around it with a lot of intellect, dedication and creativity going toward making it more useful.

Ethereum and ripple has made a success with respect to where they started from. I have a great feel that this is year for altcoin rise and bitcoin price stability.
