apart from there being plenty of threads also in this section which invite to conversation, why do you think there are threads like "Let's Count to 21 Million with Images"? See it as some kind of ironic, subtle CAPTCHA test, which, apparently, you failed.

Certainly not in every case. As an experienced member you probably know better that there happen to be unique questions once in a while. 
Of course but there needs to be some mechanism in place to avoid the problems if it wasn't in place. This just happens to be the best current solution. If there's a better one that would solve the same issues and cause less inconvenience for genuine newbies then it would most likely be adopted.

I'm steadily taking my time, wading through mostly nonsense, but I've found some really interesting stuff.

shame replies don't count towards the 5. I don't want to spam but 4 more might be tricky

This is not the only forum where similar rules are enforced. It allows the moderator and other people to find and report spammers before they start flooding the main boards of the forum. It is also a friendlier part of a forum as "new member" questions are expected in here.
