Assholier-than-thou retard magnet
Start a competitor to your past employer with the data as seed data. Never sell it. Never share it.

People are getting worked up over the ethics of this data. Every sales person in the world takes their client list with them when they leave or are fired from their employer. Sales people are poached by competitors solely because they have know the client list of the competition. Sales, biz dev, press officers, CxOs are all poached by competitors for their data and connections. The business world is a brutal place when you see it from the executive level. Ethics quickly go out the window when you deal with 8+ figure revenues and profits.

Take them across the street and sell them to Jerry Graff.

Illegal -- immoral -- wrong in my opinion. Delete it and move on to a legitimate way of making BTC. If your name were on that list what would you want someone else to do with it. Are you ready for your employer to find out about your activities? How do you think they will react. Too much risk.

Mentioning where it's from was a stupid move... if I were you now I would simply get rid of it / cover tracks.

Yep.

Whatever the outcome, you will probably be fucking people over. If you're alright with that, continue.

Obviously, there is a high probability that you will be caught and prosecuted, as many people have already pointed out. If you're alright with that, continue.

If you're not sure what to do with the data, the easiest route would be to find a buyer who does. It's up to you whether you want to know what they plan to do with it, though your liability might make you just a bit curious. There are definitely ways to reduce your risk and distance yourself from any nefarious activities (though you have already perpetrated a grave one by stealing the data itself).

I personally don't know enough to direct you in any way, but there are certainly people here that could.

You say London based and online gambling, so I assume its one of the more major players (at least reasonably well established).  The UK has strict laws covering data theft (which is what this is as the dat did not belong to you).

You are risking quite a long spell in nick if you go through with this.  I would forget about it, unless you want to risk everything!

how could i possibly be risking jail time?

Depending on jurisdiction, you can be facing criminal charges for violating personal secrecy laws by stealing, storing, transferring, and exposing information.

Plus, as many gambling organizations understand value of list such as this, they may attempt to purchase list from you through blind intermediary.  Then you are identified (at minimum, circumstantially) and goose is cooked.  Gambling houses often link to "organized" crime or at least shady characters.

Smartest move is cover tracks and delete all trace of these data.  Second smartest, or more stupid, is cover tracks, encrypt data, hide data away from home, and forget about for year or two.  Then you can make money from data.

More stupid is not forget and research, network, and such in gambling data area in years before using data.

If must use data, decrease probability of you as thief by increase pool of people who could possibly have these data.

But smartest move is make money without these data.  Delete these post and ask people quoting you to delete post in thread.  Criminal talk is bad for everyone.

From experience with a former co-working taking client data, it's absolutely possible to discover who it was.

I'm wondering what this has to do with Bitcoin and why you would be asking here?

Because he wants to be paid in BTC for the data.

yes that's correct, thank you.

Keep it Simple. Every Bit Matters.
What you are suggesting is illegal, not just unethical.
Don't try to use it yourself, that is all I'm saying.

To me a million dollars isn't enough to risk jail time and time away from my family for, I guess others would feel different Smiley

If this is true, you have greatly reduced your anonymity with the specifics you provided.

I lost my job at a good sized London-based online gambling company recently, but not before copying the past year's depositor data on to a flash drive. I have nearly one million records of individuals who have deposited money into their casinos... full records; including home address, phone, amount deposited, etc. I know from working in the industry for years that this kind of data is literally worth millions of dollars.

This is sort of a once in a lifetime opportunity for me... i regret if some folks view my actions an unethical... but in these shite economic times, we all have to look out for our own families first. My former employer was seriously under-utilizing their customer data anyway.

My question is... I'm not a marketer... what is my best move here? Should i be setting up servers to bulk mail these people gambling ads every day? Or should i try to sell the data quickly and walk (run) away laughing?

Anyone offering services that may be able to help me effectively monetize this data, please feel free to spam
