Interesting replies, I'll have a look at antminers, current and previous versions. Cheers. Smiley

If you tell us a little more like your electricity we can help more as far as what to go with.

If very cheap S3 is great to go with as they are rock solid.  If higher priced the newer gen makes much more sense.

If you have a separate room in your house, and can invest in some isolation to the sound, then I think most of the spoondlies hardware should be fine.

Get a rack, plus a fan, and all that stuff.

+1
If you are sure about it, invest some money to control temperature, your miners will live longer.

Try to find it for cheap, and this is all based on assuming you have cheap electricity as well.

it is more efficient  at 900gh

it is less efficient at 1300 gh

the s-5 pretty much is .50 to .53 watts a gh

the  sp20 is .44 to .62 watts a gh  depends on the hash settings.

Right now I am running an sp20 at 1185gh and using 599 watts on a plat psu   that is 0.5054 watts a gh

I have had all three of them:

sp20
s-5
avalon 4.1

the sp20 set to  1200gh is medium loud  not quiet

the s-5 set to 1200gh is nut job crazy loud without proper fan mods  I can get an s-5 to do 1300gh at 55db with 35 dollars in mods.

the avalon likes to do 800 to 925 gh dead quiet decent power numbers. costly

What are the S5 mods that make it tolerable volume?  I'd consider one for my home use except how loud I've heard they are.  I don't mind fan noise, my computer runs 24/7 and has like 8 case fans, but I do mind like a vacuum cleaner running in my room all day.

Even if you mod the S5 it is not going to be near the level of the Avalon 4.1 on quiet.   You definitely could make the S5 more quiet putting in a new fan.   But it still needs a decent air flow so it does not get to hot.

Antminer S5 is the most cost effective miner at present. With a power draw of less than 600 watts at the wall anyone can use one at home. You would not want it in your living room or bedroom due to fan noise though.

I don't think you want them anywhere inside your house at all from how loud and hot they are.

If you are running in a area where you are worried about noise you might check out the Avalon 4.1 it's amazing on underclock how quiet it gets.

Shameless plug to new review I did on it: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/review-avalon-41-miner-summer-mining-notlist3d-1008726

The S5 is also a great machine.  You just you will need a spot that you are not using to put them that can keep noise away from living quarters, that's what I did with them.

I was also thinking of an sp20, I have read they are not even as loud as the S5 and out hash it.

Sp20 s not as power efficient as S5.

Depends on what you want to mine. If you're looking for BTC, then it's very hard now to profit. You need very powerful ASICs.
If you want to be an "amateur" miner I suggest to buy a multi-gpu rig, to mine alt-coins like DRK.
You need to be more specific, for example you can calculate profitability on sites like CoinWarz.

ASIC can be used to mine Darkcoin? Dogecoin?....Thanks !

Most will recommend bitmain, but it depends on your budget really. If you use it as a hobby wise instead of always looking for profit, I`d say you can go with the spoondles.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ann-spondoolies-tech-carrier-grade-data-center-ready-mining-rigs-521520

Thats the main thread, and they outperform the bitmain products and are more friendly in shelf space. Its price is still around bitmains though so its more of a preference plus having extra margins of difference of performance.

S5 s a perfect home miner. The most efficient power ratio. But, ATM, I would not buy any home miner. The time of home miner s been long gone.

If I were you I would put 80% into btc and 20% into ltc

And I would stay away from LTC or any altcoin clones with no future future. LTC has been tanking for over a year. The only possibility for it to increase in value is if Bitcoin increases first. Why buy a clone when you can buy the real thing?

Altcoins are a gamble and might give a big reward if you know what you are doing. Safer to only buy Bitcoin and hold. It is a much better option than mining and you dont have to do any work unlike in mining.
