Can someone please explain what an airdrop is? and how it works? thanks

The simple answer: it’s literally just free coins just waiting for you.

The method behind the madness, though, is a decision regarding marketing strategy. As a way to spread awareness to the relevant audience of potential investors and eventual enthusiasts, coin teams will, from time-to-time, do airdrops.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET STARTED TO RECIEVE AIRDROPS?

An Ethereum Wallet: not one that is on an exchange.
It has to be a personal address that is ERC20 compatible because most of the tokens that are airdropped are ERC20 tokens, which are or were originally Ethereum-based ICOs. I suggest using  MyEtherWallet to get started immediately

The Ethereum Wallet Must be ACTIVE. By active, I mean that you have to show at least some human use of it.
Lots of airdrops have checks in place to make sure that you aren’t just randomly generating a bunch of addresses and signing them all up to unfairly obtain more coins. This means that if your wallet doesn’t show activity, it might not receive the airdrop. Sometimes, coins will be explicit in what they look for, including some type of balance in the account.

A Telegram Account : I’m sure there are amazing reasons why Telegram is the chatting tool of choice for many of these ICOs. The coins want to boost the audience count.

Usually, these airdrop coins will also require you to sign up for their Telegram accounts. Until you receive the coin in your Ethereum wallet, do not leave the Telegram accounts or you risk disqualification for the airdrop.

A Twitter Account : Similar to the reasons behind the Telegram account, many of the airdrop coins will also require you to follow them on Twitter. Some of them will even ask you to retweet some tweet.

An email address. sometimes airdrops will ask for your email, too. If you don’t feel comfortable with giving them your real email, just create a spam one. Remember the password, though; some of them actually ask you to confirm your email.
Obtaining and Withdrawing Tokens

Usually, it takes about 1–2 months after the end of the airdrop before you receive your tokens. This is primarily due to the fact that many airdrops occur before or during token sales, in conjunction to spread awareness. And tokens are not distributable until the end of a token sale anyway (I’ll write a separate piece on Token Sales, or ICOs).

To check your wallet info and see if the token has appeared in your wallet yet, just go to Etherscan. Type in your ETH address into the search box.

Airdrop is when a project gives out their coin or token for free to a particular number of applicants. Some airdrops even tell you to do some little tasks and while some you just need to join their social media pages. Airdrop is an interesting way of making money in the crypto world

It's interesting because you can earn money in airdrop easily but always remember that not all airdrop will pay or will have value in the future because some of the airdrops i join has not paid me or their token has no value at all. I think this a opportunity for those new here in crypto that wants to earn a few tokens but remember not all aidrops are true.

Airdrop is an easy way to get profit, usually airdrops these days are giving you tasks for you to do it and after finishing those tasks, they will give you the free tokens. And some of the airdrops are just letting you fill out the google forms.

Everyone talks about what airdrop is but no one seems to know HOW TO DO an airdrop?

Does anyone know how to do an airdrop?!
There are a lot of methods are available to do airdrop. Now a  days most projects are following the method of registering into a Google application and telegram group joining. One simple method must be opening a discussion thread and asking people to reply to that with an addy. The main objective of airdrop must be, finding early or adapters. So, to find some adapters we can use the any method. One of the effective airdrop I have seen must be clam coin distribution.
Airdrop may serve the objective , you have mentioned but airdrop may lead to huge dump of a coin after it will be hitting exchange. Otherwise it will be a good method to have a  community. But when you will be providing some guy in for free of cost then obviously it may lose its significance.

So, a airdrop must be based on some action and it should not be easily available to everyone. Many a person has done something earlier, then we can give him some free coins so that bitcoin will not get into all random people.
But I do believe, more people will not consider this as a  problem. They just want their coins to be distributed to many people as possible so they give some simple tasks after that they will give to them without any proper checking too. I agree this kind of distribution will lead to heavy dump when that coin will be hitting exchange but almost all the coins are having pump and dump phases. So, there will be no significant differences if you go for airdrop without proper reasons or checking to whom you are going to give your coins for free of cost.

Airdrop is free coins for you from project. Sometimes this free stake cost very expensive. I remember in ~2015 was airdrop Community coin and this stake cost 1BTC Cheesy

But now, almost all airdrop must really got failed and it is better before.  It is too effortless to get money from airdrop but there has too many supply that's why you'd get only cents when you get it now but it has a chance to be bigger if the value and demand must high.

I didn't experience airdrop now because i think it is wasting the time to save some link of the campaign  Cry

airdrop is free for everyone to join. You will benefit from this because the developer has given a coin or token to each airdrop you will be sharing because you earn a coin in airdrop if you always join and you should always have your fill up

Simple.
You fill in forms / do steps provided on the airdrop site / post
Enter your ETH Address never use an ETH Address from an exchange if not your tokens will be lost forever, not really some exchanges will help you retrieve you those tokens but take a long time but some don't even bother so use an address from MEW / Metamask / Hardware wallet / any address you have private key access to.

An airdrop is a means for a new developer or company to introduce their coin to the market. It is done through distributing little amount of coins to many people who enrolled in the airdrop program. By doing so, it gives more people idea about the project and the coin, plus it urges them to use it in transactions, which may help in increasing the value of the coin. It's basically free coin, but the amount is not that much since its purpose is introduction.

really? that was a very lucky campaign, very notable indeed!
So going back, airdrop are rewards given to those who participate in a particular campaign. these rewards are in the form stakes/tokens in the hopes that it will be successful someday.
