Maybe BFL is a scam, but the ASIC technology isn't a scam. Anyone willing to bring something to market would be an instant millionaire.

It's a scam. The owner of the company has been convicted of fraud in the past.

it depends on the GH of the machine. You'll need significant investment to build rigs urself, like $300k+
It wouldn't be hard to get your money back if that's the total required investment.

Is the ASIC technology rocket science?

No, rockets can actually easily be built by the common hobbyist. Building an ASIC is far more involved.

Is the ASIC technology rocket science? Why isn't there electrical engineers building new chips. Anyone with some knowledge would become an instant millionaire ($100 M is a conservative number actually)...

I keep hearing that the BFL asic machines haven't shipped in 9 month yet - sounds scammy! However, they are still advertising on this board. Eventually we'll get an answer!

There are not many ASIC's out there, and the only company who has shipped has a pretty high cost for entry ($2-3k), and only ship more in fairly slow batches.
The other company doing ASICS, Butterfly, was announced about a year ago and has been plagued by constant delays and has yet to ship anything.

In either case, there is a ginormous pre-order line. So if you weren't already on the ASIC boat, its probably too late to get on.

Unless you have a huge amount of money to throw around, all you can really do is see if butterfly can produce a mass produced ASIC, enough to affect mining difficulty on a large scale. In the mean time, if you are a gamer, you can probably get a high end AMD card and pay off all or some of it before butterfly ships. If they don't ship, then you have a fairly decent mining rig or at the very least, some nice graphic cards for gaming that paid for themselves.

I don't want shares. Shares, are just like renting, and if I have a good set up here- why waste my money on low returns.

You can always just buy shares in the ASICMINER pass-throughs on btct.co or bitfunder.com.

Most recent BFL update (three weeks after last update promised deliveries to start the next week):

Quote
15 April 2013 Update

Short update today, more to come in the next day or two, hopefully.

We've been working on getting the software and firmware nailed down. Things are mostly stabilized at this point and with our current boards (we do not have the redesigned boards in house yet), power usage exceeds the 1w/GH, unfortunately, but it's much better than anything out by 40 - 50%, at the wall. We are gearing up to start shipping out some dev boards and a few Jalapeno's most likely this week (at least a few dev boards) and then as more chips roll in we'll be shipping out the Jalapeno's. When the new boards land in KC, we'll start shipping Little Singles and Singles at that time. I don't currently have a time frame for those, but I should have something later this week in regards to that.

Obviously, the minirig can't fit 1.5 TH/s in a case the size of what we were planning, but we have some interesting solutions with regards to that. Expect and update on there as well, but I did want to let everyone know we have several solutions to solve the minirig issue and we are moving forward on that front.

I did want to quash any rumors that there was something wrong with the chips; there isn't. The chips themselves are fine (other than using more power than we expected), the delay is strictly due to having to re-engineer the power system on the boards (which requires a larger PCB redesign to a degree) and refine/streamline our processes for getting chips from silicon to mounted on boards. Things will be rolling along soon, albeit a bit slow at first, and then picking up speed as the whole process is optimized and finalized.

In other words, they still have no idea of how to produce a working product, let alone mass produce the what, 30,000, that will have to be delivered before any ordered today will be.

There was some shit online..

I was thinking ASICRIG, or Butterfly labs.

BTCFPGA was run by a drunkard who proceeded to piss away his venture in an alcohol-induced mania.

PrimeAsic and Lightning were confirmed as scams

BFL has not delivered a working product even 9 months after it should first have been available. Meanwhile the proposed specs have halved and price has doubled, while BFL have demonstrated again and again that they have not the slightest idea on how to develop an ASIC in the first place.

I've seen some going for 2.5kUSD with a 100GH/s rate.

It must be the weed I'm smoking.

You may be working off old information.  BFL used to, if memory serves, advertise the promise of a 100GHs miner for that kind of price.  Today that money will get you a promise of a 50GHs miner.

But thus far all BFL have delivered is promises - most of them broken.  They originally promised delivery, IIRC, in October 2012.

Pass it this way!!! Where have you seen that? I would strongly suspect that it's either a pre-sale scam or an individual attempting to scam. As already mentioned here, the only actual ASICs that exist are from Avalon and ASICMINER.

It's hard to get your hands on an ASIC with today's very high demand and short supply.
