In the future will survive only the altcoins that can offer features that are relevant for its users and is popular enough to have commercial relevance worldwide. The main goal of an altcoin is to bring innovation in some area that the other altcoins couldn't do much about it.

Altcoin with the best feature will survive. If the project of building altcoin just to get crowdsale and play dumped and pumped in exchanger, the altcoin will slowly die because many crypto users will find altcoin that has multiple function like eth with it's smart contracts.

I like Ripple because is... don't get me wrong - regulated.
So his future is more brighter then others around if one day some politicians decide to put down some crypto coins.
I'm still holding many of other coins too, but for short term for big amounts and long term some little of every "worth" coin.

Makes no sense to buy ETH at 8 billion market cap when XEM at 500 million has superior tech and some other low priced alts like lisk have lots of potential too.

Most coins don’t survive for long since they don’t solve any real world problematics or the development stops, but it is impossible to generalize some altcoins are going to survive and thrive.

There are some Altcoins who are a real answer to a real world problem, the most funny point about them is that they get just a very few support, like namecoin, i like the concept, the idea, and how does it work.
While  P&D coins get a lot of attention, this is sadly because the Altcoin world is still too young to attract real investors, so instead, there are just some kids playing a bunch of satoshis, and then complains about been scamed by some nerdy scamers.

The thing is that Altcoin users should be more aware of the power they have. There is actually two projects i am foloowing closely, Nexus and codeX.
I am sure that Nexus will bring Altcoins to space, and they provide a real good code quality, i watched some of the videos made by the original creator of the coin, and i must say this guy really knows what he is doing, so for me it is one of the best projects actually based on an Altcoin.
CodeX is a great project run by an IA enthousiast, blockchainmechanic is really a good guy, and he will not issue an ICO like most of Altcoins did, it will be a crowd funding, with great features in the wallet, like, simultaneously running several coins from the same wallet, with a built-in IA with capacities to self-learn which is for me an enormous development to the blockchain technologie.

So the future of altcoins depends of projects like that who brings real new improvements and solutions to the real world problem. considering all the scams and complains from the users i am sure that authorities are aleready considering the regulation of Altcoins, and that will kill a lot of projects and put a load of users to jail (XMR, DASH and all the Annon coins).

People prefer to buy hype as much as the tech beind a blockchain. Btc ltc eth ripple pivx have the most hype.  

Btc because it is slowly becoming mainstream and the layman doesnt know about alts, only btc brand name.

Ltc because its use is easy to understand for the layman. 'Silver to Btc's gold '

Eth because it has a lot of hype behind it, 2nd on market cap with over 4 billion dollars. Eth also has strong partnerships with transnationals. If eth goes up all the forked coins from the eth chain and dapps will go up. Wings and lisk might go up as well on the same rationale as dash and pivx hype.

Also ripple because ripple is the crypto doormat for banksters to trample on, use and abuse pnd and launder money through. Ripple could x3

Pivx will go up because it has simple, strong tech, a new and improved dash will no scam instamine. Crypto clowns will think 'hey if dash goes $50 surely pivx can go to 20'

Crypto now is worth about $30billion, it is going to be $50billion to $100billion by year end and most of it going to altcoin.

My best bet is altcoins with a different purpose will stay alive.
Name coin as example or a more recent one is Storj Share [SJCX]

first make up your mind about what you really want. is it profit or is it technology or is it usage.

if it is profit then stop with these questions and join a pump and jump out of the rocket before it runs out of fuel.

if it is technology then it is hard for me to explain since i have never looked for it, but there are a lot of innovations or at least innovative ideas in this market.

if it is Utility, then only bitcoin and then maybe Monero and Litecoin and honorary mention of Dogecoin only because of its community. these are coins to look at and nothing else.

just stick with the strongest one, the other are done only to scam people from their bitcoin, invest in them only if you expect a return, although they remain risky, follow only those that you think are at least supported for a certain time and the dev is not going to dump the premine, and also all the utility that those coin you said, they have, it's also a thing that bitcoin can do, bitcoin can be used in social media and can be used without destroying your privacy but it need harder work, i use altcoin for diversification, it's good to have bitcoin side by side with other legit altcoin

The key issue is going to be regulations.
If the major 1st world govt's crack down and make new rules / laws that can change the scene.
Other than that i think business as usual..
They will keep making them and losers will keep buying in to profit off them.

Right now it amounts to a giant digital pyramid / ponzi scheme machine.

Virus makers coding Ransomware got excited and seen dollar signs.
