I've been wondering recently what's ahead for us in terms of the evolution of digital currencies.
Many things are going digital already, and it is slowly becoming a preference for people when options are presented.  This is an indication and sign that the future of digital currencies is good and will be much bigger than it is now. Digital currencies came just at the right time just at the birth of the advancement in technology to the digital environment, so as technology in the digital sector advances more, digital currencies will grow and have more uses and will be better accepted.

Technological evolution will continue to grow. But cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, have their own special place because of the various benefits they get. Bitcoin is becoming a product of technological developments that is increasingly accepted in the world and has gone through a lot over the years.

Even though one day there might be a technological evolution that might be more sophisticated, however, it's not certain that the essence, benefits, and usage can be like or more than Bitcoin. So it's better to focus on this more certain thing first. But that doesn't mean we close ourselves to other technologies. Because after all, we can see the pluses and minuses and how to use them. After all, the cryptocurrency world is always evolving too, right?

Even if these negative events stop, no revolutionary projects are likely to emerge. Let us remember the history of cryptocurrency creation, not from the launch of the first blockchain, but from the inception of the idea itself.  Almost half a century passed between the first thoughts and the first product, technological projects like cryptocurrencies are born for a very long time, decades. And it will take another decade before this technology is fully adopted around the world and available to everyone.

Exactly. It's going to be a long time before we see any major breakthrough in technology that will "blow" crypto/Blockchain tech out of the sky. The pandemic (and now the Russo-Ukraine war) have set us back for a few years. Progress cannot be achieved quickly as it used back then. What the future holds for our society, is a mystery. But I'm pretty sure crypto will be replaced by a better technology in the distant future. Neither you or I will be alive by the time that happens, but probably our grandchildren will.

Let us enjoy what we have now, while it lasts. As long as we're able to enjoy the benefits of decentralization, there should be nothing to worry about. Just my thoughts Grin

I've been wondering recently what's ahead for us in terms of the evolution of digital currencies.

There has been a lot of amazing development with blockchain and cryptocurrencies in general in the past decade. But I wonder if there's anyone working on other ideas or technologies that could also be promising. I'm not talking about altcoins. I mean real breakthrough ideas, similar to what happened when Bitcoin was originally introduced. It would be really exciting to witness the birth of something completely new in the next years/decades. I'm sure we have other brilliant "Satoshis" out there.

I'd love to learn more about cool projects and concepts that could be the evolution of blockchain (again, not altcoins please  Wink)
The future of digital currency must be bright. Bitcoin was born in the economic crisis, so the future of digital currency is a world currency that maintains the stability of economic order. Of course, this will also be a long process, from the initial virtual economic bubble and Ponzi scheme to gradually more and more users participating and using it. Then many countries and governments can also accept digital currency, show a more friendly attitude towards Bitcoin, and even use it as legal tender. In the future, digital currency will be accepted by more countries, and of course it will be more strictly regulated. Ultimately the future belongs to digital currencies.

It is unlikely that there will ever be a real breakthrough that promises a new blockchain and cryptocurrency that can be similar to or even surpass Bitcoin.
However Bitcoin will remain the number 1 cryptocurrency in the world and become the head of all crypto digital currencies.
We can see as an example with ETH being one of the most popular cryptos and having a good blockchain behind it still can't match or surpass Bitcoin.
I think the idea you said will never materialize or even be impossible to achieve.

Cryptocurrency technology hasn't even reached 10% of its potential in the global community, and you're already thinking about something new and breakthrough. It's like buying a new phone and dreaming the next day about an even newer phone before you've even tried it. The only breakthrough, in quotes, is CBDC, which wants to completely centralize digital payments and kill cryptocurrencies with their complete substitution. Is that the kind of breakthrough technology you're waiting for? Wink

That's certainly true, mate. Crypto/Blockchain tech is just getting started, so it's going to take quite some time before something new and revolutionary replaces it completely. I still think Quantum Computers will improve the performance and cost-efficiency of existing blockchain networks. But it would be just an improvement to an existing tech. Nothing completely new from scratch that will blow your mind.

The world is struggling to recover from the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukraine war, so we can't expect any advancements in technology until the tide is over. Who knows what the future holds for crypto/Blockchain tech? Just my opinion Smiley

The innovation of future technology will definitely provide the foundation for the development of digital currency. It can be said that Bitcoin is a successful digital currency. However, there are many "scams" in the encrypted market, which consume people's patience again and again, and many people leave the encrypted currency market. Many countries have now begun to try to develop and use digital currencies.

I think it will take time but it will happen, and that's the scary thing about crypto, in fact the only thing that I worry about. Bitcoin and crypto could be new, but when the time comes, maybe in 10 years, maybe in 50 years, but when the time comes something will replace it.

If we trust all of our investments into crypto then when that happens and something better comes out, then we are going to end up with a limited amount of chance to survive in the crypto market. Many people will leave this market and go to that new market and that will crash the prices which would be hard. So all in all, it's better to follow the market movements and where people move to.

Digital currencies have gone down a lot in a span of few days. Between 2020 and 2021, the market for digital currencies was also very good. But since 2022, the market of digital currencies has been going down continuously. Every investor has suffered huge losses by investing in digital currencies. However, many have analyzed the market and by analyzing the market they have said that the market of digital currencies will be strengthened a lot from the end of 2023 to the middle of 2024. If their figures are true, I think digital currencies will be in a much better position in the coming years. To those who invested in digital currencies, I would like to say that if you wait until 2024, maybe something good is waiting for you.

They have fallen in price over the last year, nothing serious happened in the last few days. The bear market is doing its job, who will survive this period, will get good profits in the future, and who will not, will count losses and catch FOMO. Now a lot of people are saying that everything will start to rise soon and I don't like it very much, because the market very often likes to move against the expectations of the majority.

We are still early to say things that will happen ahead of us because honestly, we are still in the early stage and there are more updates and developments to come in the future. Also, don't forget the vast lists of countries and big companies that will gonna adopt and implement cryptocurrency in their business and economy. Therefore, if you are hesitant to invest in any of those coins, it's better to wait until things will be cleared and only legit coins will remain because as we come to the future, they will keep updating their regulations until no scammers will remain in this industry.
We are getting benefits from crypto currency and I think we have passed many years to analysis about it. It is true that many countries and companies are accepting Bitcoin and other crypto currency. If we wait some more years, will it be possible for us to buy crypto at low price? I think it is time to analyze more and buy potential crypto.
when talking about crypto currency prices, of course the future is still very bright,
especially now that crypto currency prices can be said to be very cheap and it is still very easy to experience up trends again,
many countries have also made rules regarding crypto currency, so I Market sense will be healthier and blockchain technology will also develop in the future,
so don't worry and keep investing.

I think people are having misconception between being adopted by the public and being just something mainstream in the news. When we're talking about public awareness, surely many had already heard about crypto but surely also many had not planned to adopt it just yet and yeah I believe that 10% that you mentioned.
I barely even heard any adoption here in my area, just a general knowledge. Maybe?

Maybe due to NFT craze back then people have been somehow aware of it.

There is nothing like this yet. Bitcoin is still reference in the universe of decentralized finances and it seems it will remain like this for a long time yet, besides being the basic layer for any other projects' concepts to start being imagined and developed. Even the altcoins chains you don't want people to mention had their original source on bitcoin. So it's impossible to talk about the future of digital currencies without mentioning, thinking or using bitcoin as reference. Maybe in some decades from now we will heard about something really new. Until there bitcoin does all the job. Cheesy

We might be able to buy at a cheaper price if there's a bear market, the only difference is the price level. Also, crypto might only crash that much if there's a new technology or currency that will be introduced in the market, this might be a big threat for Bitcoin but its hard to know if this is possible to happen or we will stick with the fiat currency and cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is still the king, the market depends on its trend its hard to break it because the future is still good for Bitcoin.

Bitcoin will still remain on the top of the foodchain, even though there is no improvement as compare to altcoins project, it is the prime mover so that will remain.

The market has been saturated already, not sure if there is some projects that will come up in the future that will disrupt crypto market again. And those that is coming up is pure hype as they could simply die in the next bear market. So not sure what blockchain idea you are looking for that is not "altcoin related".
I agree bitcoin will stay on top to lead other coins because bitcoin is first. Unless, sometime in the future, there is a different technology that can provide more impact than bitcoin, the current situation is bound to change. But bitcoin will continue to lead cryptos, and even though the market is saturated right now, people who believe in bitcoin will continue to buy and collect more. They want a lot of profit from investing in bitcoins, and now they are still trying to own more.
I also would like bitcoin to be the number one cryptocurrency forever, but it seems to me that ETH will soon take its place. You could call ethereum the state currency. Look how quickly and demonstratively ETH mixers are closing. For the most part, bitcoin is already obsolete. It has no additional features other than transfers. Whereas ETH has much more functionality.
We would not think that ETH could replace bitcoin but it could happen in the future. Moreover, we will never know what the future will be like. We still hope that bitcoin can become the number one cryptocurrency and it can still happen in a few years. And ETH still has a chance to be behind bitcoin in leading other altcoins, especially those in the ETH network. Maybe we feel that ETH has more functions, but if an ecosystem is newer than ETH and can offer more functions, the coin can replace the ETH position later.

Do you mean that Bitcoin never satisfies you OP? But for me, Bitcoin is enough. In fact, it was a unique project created and I don't think it was necessary to have new like Bitcoin otherwise, it was just considered an altcoin and had no originality. Adoption may not be as fast as we see but it somehow increasing meaning that people are started recognizing the value of Bitcoin. Cryptocurrencies may not stay forever but I believe in the contribution it has to the community and market development.

The future of digital currencies are surely be bright. Isn't it obvious? We are on a digital age now. There are lots of developments that occurred in blockchain and in cryptos which is a good thing but along with it is that there are also a huge number of scams and failed projects which is bad as many people lost their money and then this have badly affected the reputation of cryptos.

The latest thing in digital currencies would be the CBDC. This should be a valid one as it wasn't really a crypto or an altcoin but it was like a dollar since it was created by the banks and the governments. I know there are more to come later on. This is exciting but I hope each of them won't have any conflict with other.

This is cryptomarket where the top coin is Bitcoin and the rest are considered altcoins, so you mean you are looking for another Bitcoin? I guess it will not happen in cryptomarket, maybe on a different market but not here. Cryptocurrency is still the trend and it might last longer, it will be hard to compete with Bitcoin where all the cons already compliments by the altcoins, Satoshi’s mind are already out with the good altcoins developer.
I think Bitcoin will still be the king of crypto and I don't see any other coin that can unseat it,
even Ethereum which is the 2nd ranking coin in CMC it will still be difficult,
but in crypto sometimes things that we don't predict can happen

At the moment we still can't guess, we know that future technological developments are sometimes beyond our expectations and guesses. It could be that they are currently developing the technology or something because of how fast blockchain is developing. I'm sure there will be something new again in the future. but here, blockchain and cryptocurrencies are also growing. However, like Bitcoin, it has undergone many processes, and that process is one of the most valuable things. Indeed, we cannot guarantee that Bitcoin will always exist and be worthy, but if we look at how Bitcoin has progressed and processed so far, I am sure that Bitcoin will continue to survive, but not necessarily with altcoins. So Bitcoin should be able to continue even though there are other technologies that may have more than this.

Well in the end Ethereum is also "just another altcoin" if you see it that way but i think it was Ethereum that was the most important project to bring the crypto space into the mainstream and not bitcoin.

To be clear, I wasn't trying to offend any altcoin  Tongue I was just trying to protect the topic because I could already see people coming here to shill their coins, saying they are the "Bitcoin killer". I was just trying to keep the topic on a good level.
Your basic question is very general, so you will bring this topic to a wider, and not limited. So that will lose the main purpose of what you want. And those who comment will give different responses, which makes you confused in determining the direction of the topic.

If you are interesting with new ideas, maybe you can learn about the issue of internet network switching to satellite network, or in other words satellite internet. They revealed that the advantages of satellite internet network can communicate easily while in the middle of the sea. Internet network now requires wired functionality, and network coverage is limited. And I think this idea will be related to the crypto we are currently using, so we need to study the extent of the function of the network.

Evolution is probably the right word here although you seem to imply that you are actually asking what the next "revolution" could be looking like. The revolution took already place as that was the introduction of a currency successfully working on the principle of decentralization on a global scale across boarders. That wasn't possible due two the double spending problem.

So I guess the question would be whether there are new technologies in the pipeline that could successfully organize a currency or a whole ecosystem in a decentralized fashion? We are probably going to see various evolutionary steps when it comes to Bitcoin, but lots of it is probably going to happen on layers different from the Bitcoin base layer. In the long run Bitcoin might altogether go through lots of iterations, but with technological progress will probably also come some counter-regulation from governments if the technological advancements could undermine their urgent desire for mass surveillance, for example.

Whereas ETH has much more functionality.
but i would like to predict bnb will overtake eth though we don’t  surely what happen in the future cryptocurrency market. but how eth will overtake bitcoin it is impossible to me think in this time. what do you mean by additional features? imagine how much bitcoin users whole over the world.

The future is very difficult to predict. Based on what is there now, we can see the likely things, and we will still err. You can look at the movie Back to the Future, for example, there are some things it got right and some things it got wrong.

Big innovations like Bitcoin that change the world are always rare. If they happened everyday they wouldn't have been as exciting to watch them unravel. This is one of the reasons why we haven't seen any groundbreaking innovations in this scene.

I agree, when the wheel was invented, which marked a before and after in transportation, more than 5,000 years had to pass for another such radical revolution, which was to be able to fly.  What we cannot predict is what we cannot even imagine today. Imagine explaining to someone in 1800 what the Internet was going to be. He couldn't even conceive it. Let alone if you go much further back in time.

In any case, I think the most likely thing for the next say 10 years will be that Bitcoin will continue to exist and revalue in purchasing power, that CBDCs will be implemented and that most shitcoins will go to hell.
I very much agree with the above views. I think encryption now needs to improve the infrastructure more urgently, so that more people can come in to understand encryption, make the path of entering this industry more diversified, and regulate some liars and robbers to destroy the encryption industry. Safety.
All those that do not conform to positive energy will be abandoned, and those that conform to healthy development will become more and more prosperous.

The most obvious of the revolutions that are coming are quantum computers, this will force bitcoin to change to protect itself from those computers and the potential attacks they could produce, but other than that everything is up in the air, this market is still in its infancy and it can be molded depending on what kind of new technological advancement becomes widespread during the next decades, and this means we have no way to be sure what kind of direction this market will take.

The only thing I can think of is Quantum Computing. This new breakthrough in the world of computing could greatly improve the performance of existing blockchain networks. But I think we're decades away from seeing this becoming a reality anytime soon. Other promising tech seems to be DAGs (Directed Acrylic Graphs) which aim to make crypto faster and cheaper than ever. Bitcoin won't likely change to a DAG anytime soon (especially when there are a lot of security issues tied to DAGs), but at least we have an alternative to existing blockchain tech (with improvements, DAGs could replace blockchains in the future).

I'd say it's a wild guess to tell exactly what breakthrough innovation will radically change Bitcoin for the better. The future is not set in stone, so developers have plenty of time to come up with fresh and new ideas. All I care about is decentralization and censorship-resistance. As long as Bitcoin stays decentralized, nothing else matters. Just my opinion Smiley

Well in the end Ethereum is also "just another altcoin" if you see it that way but i think it was Ethereum that was the most important project to bring the crypto space into the mainstream and not bitcoin. The reason for that is pretty simple, Ethereum was the first project that introduced the smart contract functionality into the crypto space and that changed everything. Without smart contracts we would have no tokens, no NFT's and the whole concept of Defi would also not be possible. Dexes would also not be existant.

I have no idea how "the next big thing" could look like but i am sure that if it comes, then it will come pretty much out of nowhere for us normal people.

"No altcoins" and yet you have written this in Altcoin discussion Smiley.

I had originally posted this topic on "Bitcoin discussion" but it was moved here  Smiley

In the next years, we will see a crazy evolution in the hardware and software, All will be different, the cryptography will change, the mining will move to quantum mining, and that will be resumed in fast blockchains, just think about bitcoin but with blocks each second, that will be a crazy evolution for the cryptos.

I agree. But when quantum computing goes mainstream in the future, won’t this pose a threat to the current security behind crypto?

But thanks all for your interesting point of view and links. I’ll be checking them out!

One thing that worries me about the blockchain is how it will be used by governments to track transactions and tax people. We are already seeing this in the US, where the IRS is investing billions of dollars to track profits. The ledger allows them to go back to any time in the past and go after people for any reason they choose. I see this as a vulnerability of the system. I hope someone will come up with a digital currency that doesn’t rely on a blockchain and can act more as a p2p transaction. But I know this might be impossible to solve without running into the double spending issue.

Birth of something completely new would be impossible to predict because no one had even had attempted it, researched and talked about in the forums before.
I think that next big thing already has ton of failed attempts in the market. And my guess it would be related to Digital identity and Zero knowledge tech.

That could honestly change everything. Concept of privatekeys as they are probably also going to change a lot. Because when even experienced users can't always handle them safely, you cant expect normies woud.

No one really can predict the future of bitcoin for sure, but what I do know is that we are moving towards a more decentralized system where peer-to-peer transactions are faster, safer, and easier.
but I think the future of bitcoin and blockchain is very bright and both will continue to survive, especially blockchain. It has the potential to revolutionize many industries such as finance and healthcare, by providing secure, transparent and immutable records, it can make transactions faster and more efficient.
and besides, its decentralized nature can help reduce or even eliminate fraud and increase trust between parties. And overall, I believe that blockchain technology will be a major part of our future.

Aren't we evolving? The creation of newer solutions make us evolving in the process, we never heard of defi before, NFTs, rollups and other protocols that keep on developing. The huge institutions would never let into crypto if they don't see the massive potential ahead in this space, they know crypto will be huge in the future.

It still looks safe for now, but the increasing number of technological advances that are used in all countries is aimed at one of these, using all-digital so I'm very sure that more and more people will use digital currency, because we are in a digital era, everything  use their cellphones to make money transactions or shop and many more in my opinion for the future, and maybe at this time not all countries have fully implemented digital currency, everything is still in phases..

I think that Bitcoin was the best invention of our century that we live in and I think that "Satoshi" intentionally left himself anonymous to push more innovators to show their capability by building new projects, better than Bitcoin.

However as time has passed by it also has proven that no other brilliant "Satoshi" exists so far because we have not seen yet such a creation from anyone else,I personally doubt that there are more intelligent and brilliant minds alive in our time than the real inventor of Bitcoin.

Those days are gone! Now the crypto market is full of scammers and meme coins which shouldn't have existed at the first place. But unfortunately with the rise and flexibility of DEXs, it has become extremely easy for anyone to build a meme coin and get it listed in a DEX.

Innovation has definitely not stopped but with the huge amount of competition, it has become very difficult for the innovators to pitch their idea in crypto market.

Unfortunately I haven't heard of any path breaking innovation in the crypto market in recent times.

As technology keeps evolving, and so will all different innovations around. Bitcoin was and has been a very brilliant concept, but I think there is going to be more room for development and evolution.
Human civilization won't stop and many technologies, innovations will be made. Bitcoin is not a first cryptocurrency but it is a first successful cryptocurrency and it has set a solid foundation for other cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.

I believe that Bitcoin will never die and it will be an iconic cryptocurrency.

There is also the problem of greed. Developers at some point started wanting to make money and only caring about profit, so they stopped taking the hard route of invention and started using the simple route of duplication and token creation to make quick and large amounts of money.

bitcoin has a good locking mechanism to then allow iou/pegged tokens in sub networks..
however its on these subnetworks to also enforce a good iou/peg mechanism to associate itself and secure that value emulation to then have a useful sub system.

most/all subnetworks so far have flaws in one way or another. and a few highly promoted ones have many flaws. thus they have not gained traction or responsible value security thus not deemed a safe/viable monetary system. and just instead played around with as a sandbox experiment

we will see new sub networks with better more confident systems of value security (better monetary policy)

alot of people keep saying how things like ethereum have better subnetwork systems and yet ethereum does not have a good independent price discovery sentiment of its market via a different community valuing and deciding on prices in a different speculative market. instead ethereum just traces bitcoins price movements in over 95% of times at a arbitrage rate of 1:13, which means that ethereums own community is not really speculating much in comparison, not finding or discovering its own independent value:premium market sentiment

in short ethereum does not really have much of a independent community away from bitcoin

bitcoin remains king and in the near future can easily dominate even more once it actually achieves certain goals which have been delayed over the last 6ish years
