Because desalination is insanely expensive. Desalinated water can't be used for irrigation purposes, due to its high cost. Also, most of Iran lies at an altitude of 1,000 m to 2,000m. It will cost a lot to transport the water from the Caspian Basin (which is even below the mean sea level) to the major cities such as Tehran and Esfahan.

They have large bodies of water on their northern and southern borders. Why not take some of that oil money and build desalinization plants to support their needs?

Oil will be always needed, even if someone discovers the Miracle Free Energy Machine. You can't make plastics from electricity.

I guess they will buy a bunch of politicians in Europe and then they can go wherever they want. Probably this is a cheaper option then transporting icebergs.

Allowing people die without giving them the opportunity to defend themselves is not part of the ideals of humanity even in times of war there are some basic principles that when you win then win fairly and not by manipulating their natural emergency as a weapon to defat them. Aside that, the set of people that would be killed in that crime against humanity would include women and children that are very much innocent of what ever crimes their fathers have committed.

Soon they won't be able to drink their oil. It is pretty wasteful having to burn all that oil just boil the salt away. Not to mention, it usually can't get rid off all of it. Should they try using that to water their fields, the land would become unproductive after a few years from salt accumulating as water evaporates. I saw videos of them farming wheat in the desert, I wonder where they got all that soil to put in there.

And as you did mentioned, it's not environment friendly. I saw a documentary where they've shown the effects of the waste water on the native wildlife in the desert.

They are mostly depending on distillation rather than reverse osmosis. They have got cheap oil, and therefore they can afford distillation. But it is a very environmentally unfriendly practice. RO requires a lot advanced technology and constant maintenance. And also, the best available RO technology is from Israel. That may be one of the reasons why they are not much interested in RO.

The transportation of icebergs is the most innocuous solution to the problem which was invented by Muslims. I think that in the end they will choose resettlement in other countries and it can really be a problem for residents of those countries.

Not to mention the method they use is still costly. I don't know from other desalination plants but they still seem to have distillation plants. I wonder how many of their desalination plants use reverse osmosis instead, like in Singapore and Israel.

My cousin used to work in a desalination plant. The water they get is still quite warm, though that's not the problem. It still have a slightly salty taste to it. I suppose if they'll try using that on fields, the salt would accumulate in the soil after evaporation. And they even have to get the soil from elsewhere, considering how sandy the Arabian desert is.

Transporting icebergs is not a viable solution. It is not financially viable, and it causes a lot of environmental and ecologic damage. They need to find a permanent solution for the water crisis. Desalination of saline water may be one of the solutions, but as of now the desalinated water is still too expensive for agricultural use.

I hope it would be far in the future though. Unlike Iraq, Iran have uranium. Imagine a group like ISIS taking over a facility...


I've been seeing videos about that on  YT for several dies already. It's ridiculous, for all the expense they could have already built and operated a proper desalination plant. Guess that's not as glamorous as having an iceberg melting in the middle of the fcukin desert. Yeah, they actually marketed it as a way to green the desert, as if a single berg would be cold enough to cool that place.

Now Arab countries are living through the sale of oil. If need be, they can transport icebergs from Antarctica, but in the future when oil will not need it they may face many challenges and their background lack of water is not the worst of what they can expect. They're getting ready and so we see how Muslims are already winning a place in Europe.
