Pretty much what xhomer posted however, I find it very interesting that a person purchased thousands of dollars of something some time back yet didn't pay enough attention to it until now. I'm not buying this, sorry.

I would recommend coinbase but don't sell them all at once, try to get in contact with a tax attorney  he will guide throw all legal processes so the goverment won't seize teh bitcoin for X reason.

You have two options.

1) Dump now. Get your money but not enough to retire in good condition.
2) Hold for 5 years, come back and retire as a millionaire.

If you do 1, do not commit suicide when you come back in 5 years tho.

The revolution will be monetized!
Open an account at any exchange, get yourself verified, sell the coins and transfer the money into your bank account.  It's pretty simple.

+1 I don't think you will find a better answer.

if you plan to sell all at once, i don't recommend exchange, because you need id in order to sell such amount, and you will pay taxes for that resulting in a lower net at the end

if you can do it locally(in your zone) is better, or via localbitcoin also

Yeah, I had a felling selling them through an exchange wasn't as simple as people made it out to be. And i've been selling them locally through localbitcoin but most people just buy a couple at a time. I'm trying to sell them all (most) at once.

I would be more worried about finding a bank that won't freeze your funds in the instant your money arrives.  And of course with taxes.
For such big values any big exchange is good for you.

I would be advised if you could split your coins and do not sell it at once at all. I think your best bet for now is to use localbitcoins.com. You will probably won't be able to sell all your coins at once. But you will be anonymous while doing it. And that in the long run will benefit you more.

I just want to tell you Op that you need to be aware of selling your  bitcoin via a major exchange. If you will share your personal information and then conduct a business it will more likely result of this information being processed to government tax agency - IRS (I don't know where are you from tho). You will most likely pay tax later. So I would avoid all major exchanges for now.

You did not mention from which country you are. But, wherever you are, you can use www.LocalBitcoins.com & www.100bit.co.in to sell off. Remember, DO NOT SELL TO A SINGLE PERSON. Create different orders of say 10 BTC at a time and chose different people as your counter party...

This is really fortune you found out. Lucky guy. I could have bought all from you but don't have that much money Sad

But I will also suggest it's very risky to put all these in one exchange and sell it. You better divide and put these bitcoins in multiple exchanges.

Second this one you might want to divide your funds over a couple of more trustworthy exchanges just to be on the safe side.
It's more hassle during the registration but a lot less easier to withdraw in smaller portions then in one big sum.

You can buy some luxuries from below: cars , villas etc. and sell it for again fiat if you dont want to deal with exchanges.
https://www.bitpremier.com/

If you need small amount money then , cash in coinbase or bitstamp for only needed amount. It wouldnt not be very great to sell whole at these bottom prices.

And think that when you  first bought bitcoins what was the price $ 5 or $ 10? So youre not losing your money actually.  Wink

Personally wouldn't be wanting to sell my coins at literally the market bottom.

Unless you're in desperate need for $250k, I'd hold on somewhat.

you could also find a member in these forums to make a private sale (USE ESCROW) as to NOT crash the market as ikydesu pointed out.
Post your request in the forums and many buyers will give you their offer.
Take it from there and complete you sale - once again USE ESCROW

Use circle.com
Create an account, add a visa, sell you coins, withdraw at your visa account.

Or you can do it through virwox,
more or less the same presedure but you can also withdraw to Paypal from them.

EDIT: you can also use localbitcoins.com to find a buyer near you for face to face transactions

Ok, here's where I'm at. I bought some bitcoins 3 years ago. I wasn't even aware of the account until I was deleting stuff out of my old computer that I happened to log in and was shocked at the value it had amassed. Over the past year i've been selling them here and there. There problem is, I keep having to go down on the price on almost a daily basis. In other words, IM LOSING MONEY. I've lost 2/3 of their value in the past year. Do any of you guys know of someone willing/able to purchase my remaining 1165 bitcoins. I'm not looking to sell them one at a time anymore. I'm willing to sell them at a discounted price if I can find a buyer to buy them all.

* Before you guys berate me, i'm not a Bitcoin fanatic like most of you guys are. I don't really know where to turn. That's why i'm asking you guys for advice.
