There is more to Bitcoin than bitcoins.
Having a discussion with a friend and we are now trying to find places you could live really comfortably on $30 a day.

Anyone out there done a lot of travel? Lemme know where someone can make the most of their money.
Wait, what?! You are skipping town with BAKEWELL funds???

And I thought I was joking...

Quote

Two months has passed now from the time the GLBSE went down.I have yet to be given a shareholders list.
I doubt one is coming.I have lurked everything and read until my eyes bleed, I have tried to compile a claims list and waited for Nefario...

Unfortunately it appears no way to properly handle a relisting of the GLBSE asset exists. I have gone back and forth over this for some time now, this sucks but none the less; I must inform you that at this time you should probably consider the GLBSE listed asset BAKEWELL a loss.

You all have my apologies.

I vouch for eastern europe, too. While living from 750 euros monthly is not exactly about lying on the beach whole day and getting all inclusive full service, it's still pretty cosy here in Slovakia. Farther to the east you go, the better. We are no third world countries, most things work as expected (don't expect fake smiles everywhere, though) and internet is fast and uncensored (I have unlimited 10mbit both download and upload for 12 euro/month, could easily get 100 mbit for few bucks more if desired).

I go hike a trail. You know, a long one, like the Appalachian trail. Backpacking is fun, 30 bucks a day buys more than enough trail food, hikers are nice, and every 100 miles or so there's a family that takes thru-hikers in for a day (shower, hot meal, actual mattress, porcelain, etc). You just have to talk to the other hikers to find those places.

Cost me and my wife about $30 per day per person to pay our bills. Mortgage, Insurance, food and all that.

Alright, I'll try a more serious answer this time. After deciding what factors are important to you (cost of living, lifestyle, mentality, violent crime rates, political stability, language, diversity), you should look not into latest data for each country, but at trends in the data. Gapminder.org is a good start, and so is the CIA World Factbook (with some manual processing of their older editions).

It depends on your definition of "really comfortably". I live in Michigan, my family lives comfortably on about $20 per day per person.

Yeah, that's what some people here seem to miss.

4 person family living off of $120 dollars a day (or $80, someone mentioned a family spending $20 per person) and already owning a house is not the same as living alone with $30/day and not owning a house (especially in countries with a very high HDI and trying to live the aforementioned 'resort style living').

The amount I stated includes renting a house.

Then that's not bad I guess... I thought US was more expensive Smiley

It depends on how you live. My sister-in-law and her husband live on about $70 per day per person, have a housing cost less than half mine, but still complain about being out of money every month.

I tried to clear this up in an earlier post:

He claims you can live rather opulently.

Neither of us really know much about other places & the conversation started as "I hear you can live real good overseas for like, nothing."

I realize $1000 a month is a regular living to a lot of folk... but for this particular conversation,
Basically he is claiming resort style living is possible. Sipping drinks on the beach while some local bbq's him dinner and another gives him a foot rub kinda deal.

I was wondering how close to that you could realistically get.

seems like a long shot.. possibly if you owned a house and had $30 per day to live on, on top of the place to live.

Cigs and alcohol are taxed heavily(200%++) here in Singapore and Malaysia though. Apparently the gov imposes those taxes and uses the proceedings to set up more healthcare services. The irony..

Indeed - with mostly no free healthcare and having so "darn many people" I think that the PRC government is not overly worried about people smoking and drinking themselves to oblivion. Wink

...Assuming you don't splurge on cigarettes or other money wasting stuff...

Actually in China cigarettes are dirt cheap (popular local brands go for 5 RMB per pack which is less < $1) as is alcohol (provided you don't buy it in bars which are comparatively expensive).

Also I've met people who have successfully "couch surfed" in Beijing - so I guess you can spend your whole $30 on food, booze and cigarettes if you really want to. Smiley

Living alone and with the home paid for, living on $30 a day in about 85% of the US is doable. One would not even have to own a piece of property or lease a space if they found somebody who needed a constant eye on some place and you offer to do it for free, thus only paying for electric, phone, and wi-fi--the essentials. You could own a used fuel-efficient auto to save some bucks there, only borrowing or renting a truck when you need to move to a new location. Insurance and food would be your other main expenses. Simply budget for entertainment.

Chances are you'll have to work to earn your $900 a month, but that shouldn't be any problem whatsoever. One can do that part time, and still have plenty of time to do other things, like sleep.

The bottom line is that one doesn't need a big home to live comfortably.

It is costing me less than $30 to live on my sailboat. I'm traveling from Daytona beach to key west and its costing about $15 a day for two people, food, and fuel when we can't sail. And this is in America.

I'm not sure about comfort but we have shower and water and solar power and television and stolen wifi from time to time Smiley

With one of these, you could live wherever you park, and enjoy touring the US, or whatever country, at the same time on $30 a day. It would be best if you didn't smoke or owned a pet, but if you did, you'll still do pretty well. If you're a writer, you can even monetize the adventure.
