Buying bitcoin is no more an issue with the existence of more and more exchanges and other trading platforms. At the beginning people feel it difficult to buy bitcoin because of the fear on exchanges as well the process involved in making a purchase seems complicated. Now everything is very simple and takes place with legitimacy.
It depends too many in which country do you live. In advanced countries you will find more dealers of crypto currency but in small countries like mine there are not too many options to buy or sell bitcoin or any other crypto currency.

You can also find one in your local market or any other place in the world. Go to Google and search for your local exchanger which is more reliable than that of another country’s exchanger.

I use localbitcoins.com to buy bitcoin through fiat because it is the most simplest and convenient for almost every country you are in, I didn't face any problem yet while trading over there. Coinbase is also a good option but i will suggest you to use localbitcoins.com first.

I haven't tried any exchange yet in buying BTC using dollars because the wallet I am using has the feature to buy bitcoins using the local currency my country has. But why not try using Coinbase. And HitBTC is a good exchange, too.

I would recommend you to try Bitfinex. It is the biggest exchange Volume wise and operating efficiently. It had been hacked once though. Most of the exchanges are.

If you are looking for a futuristic exchange with high security then you should try Quoinex. It also has no trading fees. Officially certified Japanese exchange. Support more than 8 different fiat currency. I suggest you have a look at it. They have great Mobile and iPad apps also.

Can you use Quoinex outside of Japan?

Here in the Philippines we used coins.ph as our bitcoin wallet. We have some bank, remittances and  7-eleven where we have to cash-in and have balance in our Philippine wallet in cpins.ph and then convert that peso in bitcoin. That is our way of buying btc.
You can contact your local money exchanger who also deals in crypto currency. He will arrange bitcoin for you. In my country I always deal with ok pay for buying and selling bitcoin because okpay is available in my country and is also more reliable. The exchange fee is also reasonable. You can search in your local market and you will find some exchangers to buy bitcoin. It is not too difficult to find bitcoin buyers.

According to me coinbase would be your best option to buy bitcoins for USD.
They are trusted and the transaction is fast .
I would also like to suggest Xapo ,they are also trust worthy and I have used both of them and was thoroughly satisfied.
In my country there are lots of exchangers available for buying and selling bitcoins. I deal with those whom I realize the most trustworthy and reliable because there are many exchangers who betray innocent people while they send money to them for buying or selling their bitcoins and they disappear from the screen with the money. therefore for my I only deal with okpay in my country.

Coinbase is prob your go to exchange or any of the larger ones.  You could if you have one near you use an ATM and do it that way but if you are looking to buy a large amount of bitcoin this could prove troublesome as you will be there for ages inserting the cash Smiley
There is always localbitcoin which I believe has an amazing amount of options to purchase bitcoin.

I found one local bATM but fee is a killer ... 9250 for 1 btc few days ago

Whatever you do, dont use coinbase, you are going to get a lot of issues in there and it is the worst exchange that has ever existed. Better to use localbitcoins and buy your own bitcoins to the person that you most trust.
Because it is a p2p exchange, you can choose to deal directly to the seller in person and it would be a much more safer operation, i really suggest this exchange to you.
I sell my bitcoins to a guy who is always buying bitcoins, and all the transactions are smoothly.
It is the best exchange that bitcoin has at the moment.
I remember my first experience with coinbase. My Oh My! It was an awful one and before they could even rectify my issue, my heart beat was hugely on the high side looking at the amount of money involved. However, I have tried Kraken several times and it has been Okay.

Localbitcoins seems to be the most places I get most of my stuff for now but you should still be careful anyway. You can also try CEX, I have seen some good reviews about them and I am hoping to try them out soon.

Localbitcoins.com is also one of the best place to buy bitcoins and it is almost available in all countries.
1.You just go to the local bitcoins.com and sign up with your email address and you can see the options selling and buying.
2.If you want to buy then click buying tab.
3.Select the country and click for all offers.
4.Then there is the list of traders with their offers so select best offer and give the details of your wallet address
5.And send the money as how they want mostly transfer in to bank account when they send you the bitcoins.

For me, you can find a legit seller/buyer in Coinbase. It has no trust issues where you can go for a trusted and dedicated people. Coinbase is a system where it is very representative in exchanging USD.

Everybody's experience will be different from time to time when you deal with bitcoin service provider. I have been using coinbase for many years and I do not have any problem with them. You can also meet people one on one to trading  bitcoin USD. But you must learn how to do this kind of trading. All the resource you will ever need is on bitcointalk.

I get that forums posts are based on personal experiences/opinions and I do appreciate your answer. I will definitely read a bit more before I put any $$$.
That is really very necessary bro. Everyone have their preferences based on what they have experienced and most people may not even have experienced anyone as they have never bought before but earned, but for the sake of signature campaign would want to drop something.

Better you do your due diligence, but if you prefer a P2P platform with a very good support and a well laid out escrow, I will recommend you to try remitano just that you may be lucky to see sellers sometimes as they are not always much.

I wonder why people in the US do not use the platform that much compared to some other countries.

If you not the developed-country resident, you can contact or seek for a local trading exchange platform and a trusted bank. I think it not difficult to buy/ sell BTC in your own country.

If you want to buy bitcoin and you don't know where. Its better if you make a research because we don't know if the exchanges site are not supported to your country so it's better you make your own research. But be careful because we dont know if the exchanges site is legit it's better to ask question first the name of the site you already search if it's legit or not.

Find exchange website, that trades in your local currency. Look for good reputation and low fees. Make a deposit and set order to buy at certain price. I am using kraken (in europe) as my go between credit card and crypto.

Coinbase,They are also known for major violations of user privacy, which brought them the bad name, I personally prefer Poloniex over Coinbase.
Both Poloniex and Coinbase have high trading volumes.
Poloniex offers margin trading in more than 10 altcoins.
Coinbase doesn’t offer margin trading.
Trading fees Poloniex 0–0.25 percent
Percentage for other transactions such as deposits and withdrawals by different payment methods varies but Poloniex is always under 1/2 percent.
