For me a good coin to buy and hold especially when it comes to high and better value, a kind digital coin existing today, with a stability and consistency of its status, i'll choose Ethereum. As you can see in the market, Ethereum is next to Bitcoin.
I will recommend bitcoin. There's a rumor that bitcoin's price will increase drastically on 2019.

I'd still stick with BTC. However, to answer your question, I'm looking into ETH and even LiteCoin as alternatives but not really go crazy about them.
I think we can buy BTC, eth, stratis and neo. In the long run, they are all at low prices, and if they are willing to invest for a long time, I suggest we can also participate in some high-quality ico. 
think that it could be good idea to buy top-20 altcoins and hold for long term.

Now is a very good time to enter. Bitcoin has well subsided and if you have the means then you can buy it.

The best ICO in next 3 month, in my opinion, is KYC.legal, Arcblock, Nucleus Vision, Eristica. These startups have a great future in my opinion.

Invest in Nebulas (NAS), ICON (ICX), PowerLedger (POWR). They are new very promising coins. They have high potential to increase in near future. 
I would suggest you to do your own research and buy the coins which are compelling to you, Instead of asking for financial advice from random guys/gals on the internet/forum. People will shill for coins which they bag hold.
There is too many promising coins for me. Some of them are; tron, eos, iota, electroneum. Bitcoin and ethereum are the most reliable for sure. These are my picks. Especially, ethereum will be huge in 2018.
In this situation, I would prefer to buy Bitcoin and Etherium, because Bitcoin is now deep enough - you can buy it, because in my opinion it will in any case rise. The efirium shows itself very well, and if this continues, then everything will be all the very good.
This year most of the altcoins decreasing the price because the bitcoin decreased too so they are affected to each other. You can choose altcoin who the price decreased because they have big chances the price will increase or recover again.
