If you just want to store money, use a stable coin like USDT or TUSD, etc. But if you are an investor aka you want to benefit of the cryptocurrency markets growth you should buy the king of the crypto space - Bitcoin. For bigger long term potential look into solid altcoins like Stratis, ETH, etc.

Well, for me it's best to stick to cryptocurrency that's on the top of the market cap. If you are not trading and just holding your investment, it's the best time to put your spare money on them since the prices are really cheap. If you are patient enough, wait for the bull-market, that way you can earn money once the market starts moving.
It is really good advice! I can add that after buying some top coins you can invest some of your time to study crypto market. for me, the best crypto for saving money is bitcoin and ethereum, because for me both of them have quite high security compared to the others. I like both of them.
