MyEtherWallet and Mist these two wallet are safe and secured in the cryptocurrency. Both the wallet have different set of wallet. If you expecting low transaction cost it will affect your security. Many exchanges are low transaction cost is available. But this is the cryptocurrency so first important is security of the money. Because these two wallet little high transaction fees. Yes myetherwalllet is one of the best wallet to stock your ethereum I use it for a couple of month and I dont see any problem from using it I suggest to you to secure your private and dont ever give to anyone to protect your wallet.
Then if you want to buy ethereum theres a lot of exchange site where ethereum are available like poloniex the fee are too low compare to other exchange site.

It is very flexible with the GAS price you should check the network first and then send at a GWEI price that is economical but still delivers quick transactions.

I usually use myetherwallet (MEW), but you need to be very careful about the phishing scams. Always check the site address carefully, or bookmark it.

It's best to use MEW with a hardware wallet though.

You can open an account on gdax and place a limit order to buy ethereum, they donot charge any fees. If you are asking about a wallet, I use myetherwallet.

MyEther is a good choice with very good security. Just be sure to keep your private password and mnemonic codes safe off site in case.
